When Atlas Copco purchased the

Krupp hydraulic hammer business
(Krupp Berco Bautechnik) in June of
2002, Atlas Copco held a dominant
position in smaller hydraulic hammers,
but were weaker in the larger sizes used
for demolition and mining. Having
purchased Krupp, Atlas Copco now of-
fers a complete product line of carrier-
mounted demolition tools. At Bauma
2004, the new range will be introduced
under the Atlas Copco brand.

Strategic move
“The acquisition of Krupp Berco Bau-
technik was an important strategic
move,” says Claes Ahrengart, President
of Atlas Copco Construction Tools.
“It has strengthened and expanded our
product offering to the hydraulic attach-
ments market. Especially in the heavy
hammer segment, where Atlas Copco
wanted to break into new market seg-
ments in a more aggressive way.”
This is particularly true of mining, a
segment in which Atlas Copco already
has extensive knowledge. By adding
the Krupp product portfolio, the range
has been expanded to cover the needs
of mining customers around the world.
Innovators in percussion technology
For many years, Krupp had been con-
sidered one of the worldʼs top manu-
facturers of hydraulic attachments.
From inventing hydraulic-powered
percussion in 1963, to the introduction
of the largest production-class hammer
in the mid-1990s, Krupp had long been
known for industry-changing innova-
tions. Atlas Copco has been committed
to developing and manufacturing high
quality handheld pneumatic breakers
and drills since the late 1870s. Both
companies have focused on pioneering
solutions that help customers work
better and work faster.
Wider presence, stronger service
“By merging with Krupp, we have also
acquired a global network of highly
skilled distributors,” Claes Ahrengart
explains. “By adding this to our exist-
ing worldwide network of customer
centers, we can offer a local presence
and level of after-sales support that is
unmatched in the industry.” In both
companies there is a strong commit-
ment to work closely with customers
and to help them overcome the chal-
lenges they meet in their everyday
work. “The expanded network means

that we can offer parts and consuma-
bles with greater efficiency, as well as
fast access to specialized application
services.
New setup in the US
But the Krupp acquisition was not
without its “grey” areas. One unre-
solved issue was the role of Kruppʼs
sales organization in the United States
and Canada, where the company had
an exclusive agreement with Allied
Construction Products, LLC. Krupp
supplied Allied with hydraulic hammer
mechanisms, and Allied assembled
these in its own housing, under its own
brand. However, following the merger,
it no longer made sense to maintain a
separate sales organization to market
the same products, since Atlas Copco
has its own sales network in North
America. So, it was decided to ter-
minate the Allied agreement and to
introduce medium and large hydraulic
breakers under the Atlas Copco brand.

Brand crossover
At Bauma, the Krupp range of hydraulic attachments
will be introduced under the Atlas Copco brand. To
change a well known brand is a difficult process, es-
pecially since Krupp is so strongly connected to the
reliability and quality of its products and services. A
complex web of emotions are connected to any brand,
but Claes Ahrengart sees this as a short-term problem:
“The more we get to know Krupp, the more we see
the merger as a marriage of minds: we really share the
same values to a remarkable degree. So we hope that
Kruppʼs customers will soon understand that quality
and reliability are also intrinsic to Atlas Copco.”

Setting new standards

The acquisition of Krupp has opened up a whole new
area of possibilities. “The synergies we are gaining in
design, development and manufacturing, distribution,
service and support, are already being felt,” says Claes
Ahrengart. “But the position as a market leader also
comes with a high degree of responsibility: itʼs more
important than ever to prove to both existing custom-

of solid body breakers. The SB 200 hits harder, faster and is ea-

The SB 200 is the smallest breaker on
the market for 2.8–6.0 tonne carriers.
This means it can be easily tucked up
under the carrier boom during transpor-
tation between sites.
Robust integrated accumulator
The accumulator is now cast into the
main body of the breaker. Not only is
this a more robust design, but it also
means you don’t have to unbolt the
accumulator to reseal the hammer
mechanism. Additionally, the charge
valve is now flush with the accumulator
cover for optimum protection.

Major celebration in Barcelona:
TALLERS FRANCINT S.L.
opens new branch
“First in mind – first in choice” – that’s the vision of the
Atlas Copco group: a vision which Tallers Francint S.L. has now
also been sharing for 32 years – with a great deal of success.
Francint has concentrated 100 per
cent on hydraulic attachments since
its formation in 1971. It was also
Francint that imported the first
hydraulic hammer to Spain in 1972 – a
Krupp HM 400 used on the campus of
Barcelona university. It was to prove
a milestone which marked a major
change in the sector.
At a double celebration on February
10 and 11, Francint presented itself as
the new Atlas Copco Business Center
for Catalonia, Aragon, the Balearics
and Andorra while at the same
time inaugurating its new branch in
Barcelona.
The 3,000 m² branch comprises the
main warehouse, six simultaneous
workplaces, a workshop with six
gantry cranes, plus machining and
forging shops.

 Frankfurt
The oldest sections of Frankfurt Airport’s Runway North are

is to undergo complete renovation. Airport operator Fraport AG
has decided on an extraordinary approach to this project: the

Preparations for this €38 million
project started a year ago. First of all,
the project team had to solve the cen-
tral problem of maintaining take-off
and landing capacities. As the airport is
stretched to handle the roughly 1,300
daily aircraft movements with its full
complement of three runways, the loss
of Runway North for any period at all
between 10.30 p.m. and 6.30 a.m. a

section has been broken up, removed
and a new asphalt layer applied. Each
job, each step, each action was me-
ticulously planned, tried out in a “dry
run” and calculated to the minute. This
logistical challenge is being met by a
70-strong team of specialists and an
armada of trucks, excavators, hydraulic
breakers, loaders, asphalt pavers and
rollers.

tion of all activities and total reliability

models. Kirchhoff-Heine, the company
contracted to carry out the renovation
work, worked closely with specialists
from Liebherr Mietpartner and Atlas
Copco in the planning phase to deter-
mine the ideal machine combinations
for the job.
Of the seven and a half hours avail-
able each night, exactly 90 minutes are
set aside for breaking and removing
approximately 2,000 tons of concrete
rubble. Four and a half hours are avail-
able for calibration, leveling, compact-
ing the foundation and application and
rolling of the special paving mixture.
The roughly 2,000 tons of asphalt are
delivered during the day and kept on
site. The low application temperature
of 120° instead of 180°C and the addi-
tion of synthetic resins allow the com-
pound to cool and harden quickly. The
final one and a half hours are needed to
install the new lighting and for mark-
ing and cleaning work.
