"GO PINK"
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
BY LEO SUPIPI SENEVIRATNE

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October,

helps to increase awareness and support for the awareness, early detection, and treatment as

well as palliative care of this disease. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women

worldwide. The majority of deaths occur, where most women with breast cancer are

diagnosed in late stages due mainly to lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to

health services.

Most breast cancers are found in women who are aged at 50 and older, but breast cancer

affects younger women too. Many factors can influence your breast cancer risk, and most

women who develop breast cancer do not have any known risk factors or a history of the

disease in their families.

According to the recent researchers carried out in Sri Lanka, there are 23,530 cancer cases

and 14,013 cancer deaths Out of those numbers breast cancer plays a major role. Research

findings further emphasize the fact that the number of breast cancer cases will increase day

by day, so the researchers emphasize the fact that the number of cases for breast cancer will

go up to 3,799 in 2040.

Every October, people all over the world show their support for people affected by Breast

Cancer. Our work’s always important, but October is when we get to really shout about it.

Go Pink is an online awareness campaign organized by Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe

inviting all Leo & Non-Leo ladies to take part and support to spread the awareness on Breast

Cancer. We have requested all the Leo/ Non-Leo ladies to wear a Pink outfit and take a

photograph of them holding a paper where a Quote is written and it was required that the

quote must be a specific one which Spread and encourage the awareness on Breast Cancer.

Here are the responses we received from all the lovely ladies out there.

TREAT IT. DEFEAT IT

He informed me that the Lions Club of

Thalangama Malabe is willing to sponsor, and

we started the head hunt. It was our second

task to meet with the Lions club officials to

PRESIDENT'S DIARY
Giants behind the success story

What do you think of your decision of becoming a Leo member back in 2014?

Looking back through the time, it is nothing but the Love for the club, joy and satisfaction. I

believe that it was one of the best things that happened to me.

What do you think about the Leo movement?

At first I thought of it as of a cult that, carry out social services. But it was during the inductions

that I learned the real truth about the Leo movement and what these letters mean. Truly this

movement has shaped me as a Leader. It has developed my skills, abilities and personality in a

magnitude even my own self can sense.

What are the unforgettable moments in your Leo life?

I am a charter member of the club. Our Club along with Leo Club of Kolonnawa and fellow

clubs carried out a immense flood relief program back in 2016. That was the most challenging,

unforgettable project that I have involved in. I have to mention Lion Barana Ranasen, for the big

heart and spirit of his and all the other Leos.

We brought together all the key volunteering foundations such as Rotract Club International,

AIESEC and the civil society. I consider it as the proudest accomplishment of my whole life. And

I’ve served the District as a Region Director, served my club as the president, awarded two

times - Gold Star Award.

PRESIDENT'S DIARY
Giants behind the success story

What do you think about your club, Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe?

Thanks to this club I met a team of wonderful people and I have made friends for life. From the

beginning I have seen how the club is growing. And today it has become one of the main clubs

in the district. I have to specially thank Leo Yasiru, LeoThimira for lifting the club to this height

under their leadership. I am sure that Leo Vinuri also would do the same.

It is that since the beginning we wanted our members to take up challenges and gain

confidence and to carry out effective social services projects. And we see the results of journey

today, how our Leos face their life and how compassionate they are. Our club is a place that

shape and form individuals to do more in their lives. Looking back through the time, it is nothing

but the Love for the club, joy and satisfaction. I believe that it was one of the best things that

happened to me.

PRESIDENT'S DIARY
Giants behind the success story

What did you achieve by becoming a Leo?

It has broadened my heart and the way I see the world. As our pledge says I’ve heard another’s

out cry and I’ve seen the plight of the others and I am proud of myself that, I did my best by

leading the way in the journey of gathering our Leos who has the fuming need to extend their

hands and support the people who struggle with life. A broad mind, self-satisfaction and a

better version of my self is what I have achieved.

What is the advice you want to give to the new members?

I see potential in every Leo member. It is that fear of facing challenges that holds them back.

This is a place that you can be free, you can practice little things right, look up to role models.

There are hundreds of them and talk to them. Challenge yourself! Walk up to the podium and

speak. You have thousands of opportunities here. Grasp them one by one. You will be amazed!

"DIABETES & YOU - යවැ යාව සහ ඔබ"

BY LEO THARUKA PERERA

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2020 is "The Nurse and Diabetes." The campaign aims to

raise awareness around the crucial role that nurses play in supporting people living with

diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic disease, which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough

insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to an

increased concentration of glucose in the blood (hyperglycemia).

Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and lower limb

amputation. Healthy diet, physical activity and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or delay type

2 diabetes. In addition diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with

medication, regular screening and treatment for complications.

"DIABETES & YOU" is the recent interview done by Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe with Dr. E.

A. Roshana Muthuwan discussing on understanding, controlling and preventing diabetes. The

video was published via the club social media channels.
