Title: Memory Data Loss on MLWD Tools with ECMB / CBM Boards
Product
General Originator: Hans Wong

Issue Date: 06 November 2020 Approver: Philip Parcell
SOLUTION: Perform ECMB / CBM Memory Test, ECMB / CBM Memory Reformat, and
extend the 6Gb CBM Extend Watchdog Timer to 256 seconds
Detailed Information:
Several MLWD runs with ECMB / CBM boards have encountered partial or full memory
data loss during retrieval on surface. These incidents could have been caused by memory
corruption.

Actions Required:
As short-term solutions,
1. Manufacturing Level:
a. Full memory test for all 2Gb ECMB and 2Gb/6Gb CBM boards are to be
performed at heat and ambient temperatures.
2. District Level:
a. Whenever MLWD tools with 2Gb ECMB or 2Gb/6Gb CBM boards are
returned to the shop for maintenance:
i. Step 1: Perform tool level ECMB / CBM memory test (as per
procedure D01659983)
ii. Step 2: Perform tool level ECMB / CBM memory reformat (as per
procedure D01822993)
The implementation of the ECMB / CBM memory reformat is because the ECMB /
CBM memory test is not capturing all memory corruption symptoms.
3. For all 6Gb CBM boards, extend the watchdog timer from 120 seconds to the
maximum of 256 seconds. This means the 6Gb CBM board will reboot whenever
the board fails to boot up fully within 256 seconds (from previous setting of 120
seconds) from the last power on reset.
a. New 6Gb CBM boards will be set with 256 seconds on the watchdog timer.
b. All existing in-use 6Gb CBM boards already installed on tools must be
reprogrammed with 256 seconds set on the watchdog timer when they are
returned to the shop for maintenance. Perform watchdog timer
programming and verification as per procedure D01484487 Rev C.
The occurrence of this issue is random in nature and does not affect all ECMB / CBM
boards in the fleet. However, the memory test and memory reformat will potentially help to
identify any boards with memory corruption issues, as well as allowing more data collection
to assist the investigation efforts. (As instructed in procedure D01659983)
The watchdog timer extension is to address the 6Gb CBM boards issue that take more
than 2 minutes to boot up.
