Ancient Greece Lesson Plan- Wednesday

BUILDING BACKGROUND:
- TO START THE LESSON, THE TEACHER WILL PULL UP PICTURES OF ANCIENT GREEK PHOTOS OF APPAREL ON THE PROJECTOR.
THE TEACHER WILL SHOW SOME PICTURES AND BEGIN TO ASK THE STUDENTS WHAT THESE CLOTHING PIECES MIGHT BE
CALLED AND WHERE THEY MAY HAVE SEEN PEOPLE DRESSED LIKE THIS IN MOVIES OR TV SHOWS. THE TEACHER COULD ALSO
ASK STUDENTS IF THEY KNOW IF THIS IS FROM THE PAST OR IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE WEAR IN THE PRESENT.
OTHER QUESTIONS THAT THE TEACHER COULD ASK TO GET THE STUDENTS DISCUSSING COULD BE, “WOULD YOU EVER WEAR
AN OUTFIT LIKE THIS?”, “WHY DO YOU THINK THEY WORE OUTFITS THAT LOOK LIKE THIS?”, “COULD ANYONE MAKE A
PREDICTION?”. AFTER SHOWING THE DIFFERENT PICTURES, THE TEACHER WOULD GO OVER THE CONTENT AND LANGUAGE
OBJECTIVES FOR THE DAY AND SHOW THE STUDENTS PICTURES OF THE VOCAB WORDS WITH THE WORDS NEXT TO THEM.
THEY WOULD PRACTICE SAYING THE WORDS ALTOGETHER TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE KNEW HOW TO PRONOUNCE
THEM.

LESSON SEQUENCE:
- THE TEACHER WILL PULL UP A WEBSITE ON THE PROJECTOR (HTTPS://KIDS.KIDDLE.CO/CLOTHING_IN_ANCIENT_GREECE )
AND READ THROUGH IT WITH THE STUDENTS, CLARIFYING WORDS AS NEEDED. IF STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO, THEY CAN READ
THROUGH CERTAIN SENTENCES WHILE THE TEACHER PICKS UP THE SENTENCES THAT THE STUDENTS ARE STRUGGLING WITH.
- AFTER READING THROUGH THE WEBSITE TOGETHER, THE TEACHER WILL SHOW A VIDEO OF THE PROPER WAY TO WEAR A
TOGA (HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=BQYLOC_QCWY&AB_CHANNEL=THEGETTY ). BEFORE STARTING THE
VIDEO, THE TEACHER WILL GIVE EACH STUDENT A BLANK PIECE OF PAPER WHERE THEY WILL WRITE THE NUMBERS 1-5. EACH
STUDENT, WHILE WATCHING THE VIDEO, WILL WRITE THE STEPS THAT YOU HAVE TO DO WHILE YOU PUT ON A TOGA/HOW
YOU CORRECTLY WEAR A TOGA THAT THE ANCIENT GREEKS WOULD HAVE WORN. STUDENTS CAN DO THEIR BEST WITH
SPELLING AND THE STEPS DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN FULL SENTENCES. THE TEACHER WILL PAUSE THE VIDEO EVERY TIME A STEP
IS SAID SO THAT THE STUDENTS HAVE A CHANCE TO WRITE A COUPLE WORDS DOWN. WHEN THE VIDEO IS FINISHED, THE
CLASS WILL GO THROUGH THE STEPS TOGETHER WHILE THE TEACHER WRITES THEM ON THE BOARD. THE TEACHER WILL ASK
THE STUDENTS, “HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR YOU TO GET DRESSED IN THE MORNING?” “HOW ARE THE GREEKS CLOTHES
DIFFERENT THEN OURS?” AND THESE QUESTIONS ARE ONES THAT ANY STUDENT CAN ANSWER BY RAISING THEIR HAND.
- THE LAST PART OF THE LESSON SEQUENCE IS UNDERSTANDING WHY THE GREEKS WORE CLOTHES THE WAY THAT THEY DID.
THE TEACHER WILL PLAY THE CINEMATIC ANIMATION VIDEO THAT SHOWS WHAT ANCIENT GREECE WOULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE
IN THE PAST (HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=3YRJXZ6XSAK&AB_CHANNEL=NEWHISTORIA ). THEN, THE TEACHER
WILL PASS OUT BLANK PIECES OF PAPER AND ASK THE STUDENT TO DRAW THEIR BEST ESTIMATE OF WHAT THE WEATHER
WOULD LOOK LIKE IN ANCIENT GREECE. IF THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE SUNNY, THEY WOULD DRAW A SUN AND TREES. IF
THEY THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD BE RAINY MOST OF THE TIME, THEN THEY WOULD DRAW RAIN. THE TEACHER WILL REMIND
THE STUDENTS THAT THEY DISCUSSED WHERE GREECE WAS ON THE MAP THE FIRST DAY OF THIS LESSON AND THEY CAN USE
THAT INFORMATION TO MAKE THEIR BEST GUESS. WHEN THE STUDENTS ARE FINISHED DRAWING THE PICTURES, THEY WILL
RAISE THEIR HANDS AND DISCUSS WHAT THE BEST GUESS WOULD BE. THE TEACHER WOULD TELL THEM THAT THE GREEKS
WOULD HAVE WORN TOGAS AND LIGHT LINENS BECAUSE THE WEATHER WAS WARMER MOST OF THE YEAR.

REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT:


- AS A FUN GAME TO PLAY TO END THE CLASS FOR THE DAY, THE TEACHER WOULD PULL OUT SHEETS FOR THE STUDENTS AND
SEPARATE THEM INTO GROUPS (3-5 GROUPS AND A SHEET FOR EACH GROUP). AFTER THIS, THE TEACHER WOULD EXPLAIN
THAT THE STUDENTS NEED TO CHOOSE ONE PERSON FROM THEIR GROUP THAT IS GOING TO BE WEARING THE TOGA THAT
THEY ARE GOING TO BE CREATING. NEXT, THE TEACHER WILL TELL THE STUDENTS THAT THEY HAVE 5 MIN TO CREATE THE
PERFECT TOGA AND GREEK OUTFITS WITH THE GOLD STRINGS AND MATERIALS PROVIDED FOR THEM. WHEN THE STUDENTS
ARE FINISHED WITH THE 5 MINUTE TIME LIMIT, THEY WILL HAVE THE DRESSED STUDENTS STAND IN A LINE WITH ANOTHER
TEAM MEMBER THAT HAS BEEN CHOSEN TO BE THE SPOKESPERSON. EACH SPOKESPERSON WILL GO THROUGH AND EXPLAIN
THE OUTFIT THAT THEIR TEAM HAD CREATED. IN THIS EXPLANATION, THE STUDENTS HAVE TO USE A MINIMUM OF 3
VOCABULARY WORDS THAT THEY LEARNED FOR THE DAY. AT THE END, THE TEAMS WILL VOTE WHO DID THE BEST JOB
DRESSING THEIR PARTICIPANT (THE TEAMS CAN NOT VOTE FOR THEIR OWN TEAM MEMBER). THE TEAM THAT WINS WILL GET
A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FROM THE CLASS AND ALL THE STUDENTS WILL HELP CLEAN UP THE MATERIALS THAT WERE USED FOR
THIS GAME.

WRAP-UP (INCLUDING REVIEW OF CONTENT AND LANGUAGE OBJECTIVES):


- TO WRAP UP THE LEARNING FROM THE DAY, THE STUDENTS WILL TAKE OUT A SLIP OF PAPER AND USE THEIR MARKERS TO
DRAW THE AVERAGE ANCIENT GREEK PERSON AND WHAT THEY MIGHT HAVE WORN, ALONG WITH LABEL THEIR DRAWING
WITH VOCABULARY WORDS. (OR THEY CAN USE THE WORKSHEET ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LESSON PLAN) WHEN
THEY LEAVE THE CLASS OR TURN IN THE ASSIGNMENT, THEY HAVE TO ORALLY USE A FEW VOCABULARY SENTENCES AND
EXPLAIN THEIR DRAWING TO THE TEACHER.

REFLECTIONS/EXTENSION:
- The students will be reminded of the way that the ancient Greeks would have dressed throughout the
week and they will continue to be asked questions about it so that they are prepared for the quiz at the
end of the unit/week.
