Learning Competencies:

At the end of this module the learners must be able to:

a. Identify what a computer is

b. Classify different types of computers.
c. List down examples of mobile computers

Introduction to Computers

The computing device is one of the most brilliant inventions of mankind. Thanks to
computer technology, people were able to achieve storage and process huge amounts of data-
users could rest their brains by employing computer memory capacities for storing information.

WHAT I KNOW
Direction: Read the following sentence. Encircle the correct answer

a. Analog computer b. Digital computer c. Hybrid computer
d. None
4. There are designed to handled a wide range of problems.
a. General-purpose computers b. Special-purpose computer c. Purpose d.
None
5. These types of computers are designed to solve a restricted class of problems.

a. General-purpose computers b. Special-purpose computer c. Purpose d.

None
WHAT’S IN

Direction: Locate the given words in the grid, running in one of eight possible directions
horizontally, vertically, or diagonally
WHAT’S NEW
The computer as we know it today had its beginning with a 19th century English
mathematics professor name Charles Babbage.
He designed the Analytical Engine and it was this design that the basic framework of the
computers of today are based on.

Generally speaking, computers can be classified into three generations. Each

generation lasted for a certain period of time, and each gave us either a new and improved
computer or an improvement to the existing computer.

WHAT IS IT

Categories of computers

A computer has a pass through many

stages of evolutions from the days of the
mainframe computers to the era of
microcomputers. Computers have been classified
according to purpose, data handling and signal
functionality

Classification by signal type

1. Analog computers store data in a
continuous form of physical quantities and
perform mathematical operations
simultaneously. It uses symbolic numbers to

represents result. It commonly used in
industrial and scientific application like
control systems and aircraft.

2. Digital computers are the most commonly

used type of computers which use letters
and numbers as inputs in processing,
displaying the result in monitor and storing www. Techteamitalia.com
output in memory.

3. Hybrid computers are combination of

analog and digital computer system. It
applies the real-time speed of the analog
computer and the accuracy of digital
computer in solving problem www.gadgetreview.com
Classification by purpose

1. Special-purpose computers are usually

used for military purposes. These types of

computers are designed to solve a restricted
class of problems.

2. General-purpose computers are designed

to handle wide range of problems.

Classification by capacity

1. Mainframe computers are ultrahigh

performance computer designed for high
speed data processing. Mainframes store
huge amounts of data, instructions and
information. www.blog.syncsort.com

2. Mini computers these computers are

usually designed to serve multiple users
simultaneously and more expensive than
microcomputers www.smart-techinfo.blogspot.com

3. Servers are computers designed to provide

service to client machines in a computer
network. Usually they are extremely large in
size. As they have large processor and
multiple hard drives. www.qoura.com

4. Supercomputers have extremely large

storage capacity and computing speed which
are many times faster than other computers.
It is the most powerful computer and the
most expensive. These are capable of
processing more than 100 trillion instructions
in a single second.

5. Microcomputers are electronic device with

a microprocessor as its central processing
unit. They do not occupy space as much as
mainframes do. Microcomputers can be
called Personal computer or PC.
Types of microcomputers
www.pcclininctt.com
a. Desktop computer are intended to be
used on a single location.
b. Tower type computers are narrow and
tall, with integrated circuits in a more www.newspakistan.pk
compact box.

6. Mobile computers or handled

computers, are the perfect multi-use tool
for advanced data capture and mobility
needs.

Types of mobile computers

A. Laptops are small, portable computer and small computer and small enough
to sit on a person lap.
B. Netbooks look like miniature laptop, much cheaper yet durable and smaller in
size.
C. Tablets are mobile computers that are very hand to use.
D. Smartphones are internet-enabled cellular phones that include a calendar an
address book, a calculator, games and other apps which can be downloaded
from an app store.
E. Wearable computers have smaller processing power. A record-setting step
in evolution of computer was the creation of wearable computers.

Electronic Data Processing

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

STORAGE

Everything that users input into a computer are called data.

The electronic data processing cycle consists of the following:

1. Input – All the activities associated with recording data and making it available for
processing are call input
2. Processing – After the data is recorded and converted into an appropriate form, it
must be process. Processing includes different arithmetic and logical operations so
to process data means to do the classifying sorting, summarizing, comparing and
other manipulation techniques that convert data into information
3. Output – Data processing converts data into information that must be transmitted to
people who need it, the communication function that enables this is called output.
4. Storage – The storage contains the processed data and instructions must be
followed during data processing a storage device is a hardware component of a
computer, and it permanently retain and stores data in storage media.
ASSESSMENT
Directions: Read the following questions and write your answer in a piece of paper.

1. which type of electronic computer helps the user to process both continuous and
discrete data?
a. Digital computers b. Hybrid computers c. Analog computers
2. which type of electronic computer stores data in physical quantities while also
performing mathematical operations?
a. Digital computers b. Hybrid computers c. Analog computers
3. Which type of computer is the most commonly used since it uses letters and numbers
as inputs in processing?
a. Hybrid computers b. Analog computers c. Digital computers
4. Which type of computer is used for military purposes and is designed to solve a
restricted class of problems?
a. Digital computer b. General-purpose computer c. Special purpose computer

computer?
a. Mainframe computer b. Super computer c. Server

Directions: The learner will do the following

1. Create a personalized calendar showing the 4 elements of Electronic Data

Processing
2. Insert pictures of hardware for the first week, software for the second week,
peopleware for the third week, and dataware for the fourth week.
3. Take note that for each week, students should have at least 5 examples to be
inserted in Monday to Friday.
4. Make the calendar fit the bond paper. Print your work and submit it to your teacher
the next day.
5. Added points will be given to students who will showcase creativity.
