THE ROLE OF CIVIL ENGINEERS IN

NATION-BUILDING

“ We shape our buildings ,thereafter they shape us”, I cannot

agree more with Winston Churchill on this. Civil engineers are the
torchbearers of the legacy that has been flowing since Indus valley
civilisation and has shown itself in several parts of the world along the time
; and that which is the hallmark of a creative mind.
‘To build’ is in itself an attribute of God. What other act of building and
creation than that of a civil engineer can vibe with this Godliness?

Basic infrastructure is crucial for progress in any field . Be it the

construction of hospitals, rail-tracks, schools, flyovers, roads ,bridges or any
kind of man-made structure in sight; it is the blood and sweat of a civil
engineer gone in. I wouldn’t be exaggerating to state that a civil engineer’s
realm opens up the doors for other professions. It is where his work ends
that any further work could be envisioned.

History is proof ,nations who have valued their civil engineers and
recognised their contributions have carved out a niche for themselves. With
ever expanding horizons, nations also face problems with dynamicity. What
worked out today ,might not work tomorrow. Thus building a sound
infrastructure that is also sensible to the ongoing needs goes that extra
mile in persevering with every stakeholder’s efforts in nation building . I’d
say, ‘civil engineers are not the only ones chipping in in the
development of a nation , however, without them , the vision for this
development remains as blurred as next to an illusion.’

Hats off to all the Nation builders !!
