1. INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE STRUCTURE

1.1 Introduction

This Structural Design Criteria has been prepared to describe the assumptions made in the
preparation of the structural design of the LV ROOM @ DXB EXPO 2020, Dubai, U.A.E. It includes
listing of the relevant design codes standards as well as the assumption made about floor
occupancies design loads, material strengths and properties, performance criteria, fire rating
requirements for structural members.

Structural Design Philosophy

The optimum structural system of a building can only result from integrated teamwork between
Architect/MEP and the Structural Engineer.

In determining the different structural systems, a general approach has been followed. The main
characteristics of such an approach can be summarized as follows:

A. The structural system shall be defined to satisfy the structural function.

B. Safety of the building users and system, the chosen should sustain safely all applied loads with a
considerable factor of safety according to International Standards.
C. Durability of the structural elements reducing the need for future maintenance
D. Aesthetical values with special attention to adopt structural concepts in harmony with the
architectural, mechanical and electrical requirements.
E. Rationalization of structural design leading to optimization of construction cost. In addition to the
architectural features in this project, this study has been carried out considering the following
major constraints.
A. Availability of construction materials
B. Functional layout of the building
C. Requirements of the Client and the architect
D. The method of construction and its effect on the construction duration and cost
E. The economic aspects regarding the price of the various construction materials namely concrete
and steel reinforcements
F. All requirements of the local building authorities, Dubai Municipality, and the governing relevant
design codes as listed in this report.

the purpose of utilization:

1. LV ROOM.

2. REFERENCES

The following codes, standards, and regulations will be used in conjunction with the project
specifications.

1. BS 8110 -1997: Structural use of concrete.

2. ACI 318-08: Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary.
3. BS 5950: Structural use of steelwork in building.

8. BS 8004: British Code of Practice for Design of Foundations.
9. EN 1993-1-1 (2005): Euro code 3: Design of steel structures

3. METHOD OF ANALYSIS & DESIGN SOFTWARE

3.1. Computer Programs:

3.2. Method of Analysis

Gravity loads such as self-weight, Lateral loads due to wind relevant to code are applied
directly on the Structural Steel elements, wherever applicable.

3.3. Analysis & Design Software Program

A number of structural analysis and design software packages used for the design of the structure.
These include ETABS. It is a 3-dimensional non-linear structural analysis and design software
package. It used to carry out both analysis and member design phases of the project. Master EC3
was used to design the connections between Structural steel elements and also the Anchor plate for
connection between existing slab and the Structural steel columns. The main design of columns and
beams is done by ETABS.

3.3.1. ETABS Model

1. Columns and beams steel elements should be modeled and designed in ETABS

2. The model should be free of warnings

3. All structural elements should be considered in the model

4. All elements should be shown in the model exactly with the same dimensions and steel and
properties as it shown on drawings.

3.3.2. Master EC3/HILTI

1. Design of connections between steel column and beams

2. Design of Anchor plate

3. Design of connections between steel column and beams

4. DESIGN CRITERIA

This Structural Design Criteria has been prepared to describe the assumptions made in the
preparation of the structural design for the project.
