VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual reality (VR) is a simulated experience that can be similar to or completely different from the
real world. Other, distinct types of VR style technology include augmented reality and mixed reality.
It enables a user to manipulate their environment the way they want through different computer-
simulated devices and make them feel as real as physical objects. Virtual Reality gained an immense
amount of positive response from the world of gaming. It is now entering the world of architecture,
medicine, education, entertainment, and the military. Virtual reality has brought about great
evolution in the tech world and is still unfolding in stages.

Some devices come into play when experiencing virtual reality. A person using virtual reality
equipment can look around the artificial world, move around in it, and interact with virtual features
or items. The effect is commonly created by VR headsets consisting of a head-mounted display with
a small screen in front of the eyes, but can also be created through specially designed rooms with
multiple large screens. Virtual reality typically incorporates auditory and visual results. There might
be other types of feedbacks too through haptic technology. This feedbacks allow a user to engage in
a simulated world of their discretion.

Augmented Reality is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view

of the real world, thus providing a composite view. There are other knock-off products available
online which give you a similar experience to a proper VR experience. This kind requires a headset
and a phone, many youtube videos are available which have a 360-degree experience. This type of
reality is believed to be introduced in 1968 by Ivan Sutherland, a Harvard Professor with the help of
his student Bob Sproull.

Mixed Reality (MR) is the merging of the real world and virtual worlds to produce new environments
and visualizations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real-time. This term was
first introduced in 1994 by Paul Milgram and Fumio Kishino in their paper " A Taxonomy of Mixed
Reality Visual Display"

Little traces of VR could be found before decades from now.

According to an article from The Franklin Institute: today's virtual reality technologies build upon
ideas that date back to the 1800s, almost to the very beginning of practical photography. In 1838,
the first stereoscope was invented, using twin mirrors to project a single image. That eventually
developed into the View-Master, patented in 1939 and still produced today.

The use of the term “virtual reality,” however, was first used in the mid-1980s when Jaron Lanier,
founder of VPL Research, began to develop the gear, including goggles and gloves, needed to
experience what he called “virtual reality.”

Even before that, however, technologists were developing simulated environments. One milestone
was the Sensorama in 1956. Morton Heilig’s background was in the Hollywood motion picture
industry. He wanted to see how people could feel like they were “in” the movie. The Sensorama
experience simulated a real city environment, which you “rode” through on a motorcycle.
Multisensory stimulation lets you see the road, hear the engine, feel the vibration, and smell the
motor’s exhaust in the designed “world.”

There has been a lot of development in this world since then but it owes gratitude to decades of
inventions of great engineers who have set the stepping stone.

Virtual reality has provided a lot of advancement in various fields for their development.

In the military world, VR has allowed the trainees to go through the important simulatory
environment as a part of their training with a less cost. Simulations of flights, battlefields, medic
training, vehicle, and virtual boot camp allow the trainees to prepare for any required
circumstances.

In the medical field, students can learn about surgeries and procedures in depth without any critical
consequences.

In the field of education, VR has allowed teachers to create a friendly and interactive three-
dimensional world for the students to learn practically which helps a student to focus betters as well
as learn fast and effectively.

In the world of sports players as well as the viewers are being benefitted. It has allowed a player to
analyze their techniques and performances providing a training aid for all. For the viewers, VR
created a realistic and engaging broadcast at the comfort of their home by streaming live games.

The mental health of people has also been served by virtual reality. VR reenacts traumatic events
allowing a person to overcome their fear but in a safer and controlled environment. Recently, a
mother named Jang Ji-sung got reunited with her deceased daughter Nayeon through Virtual Reality
in South Korea which was documented by MBC. Her daughter had passed away in 2017at the age of
7 due to hemochromatoses. This experience not only helped the mother reunite but also helped her
let go of her child whom she yearned for.

As much as Virtuality has helped humanity for its development but as all innovations, this also has
some disadvantages. The headsets are confined to limited space so that causes a lot of strain on the
eyes. VR reduces human interaction as a person gets addicted to it. People may even use it as an
escape from real-life instead of solving their problems. People may trip and fall, VR can cause a lot of
physical injuries as well. VR causes Virtual reality sickness which occurs when exposure to a virtual
environment causes symptoms that are similar to motion sickness symptoms. Though VR training is
given to students they aren't as real. Reality is very different from that of reality which may cause a
lot of danger and inconvenience in the real world.

Virtual reality is both a bane and a boon for the human race. But despite its disadvantages, VR is
helping us to develop and originate new ideas and discoveries and has provided 800% employment
to the world. We can see an increasing demand for it and its industry as well as scope for more
development and achievements.
