Introduction to Renaissance Charter School of St. Lucie

Renaissance Charter School of St. Lucie is a K-8 public, charter school in Port St. Lucie,

FL. The school serves approximately 1,302 students (Florida Department of Education, 2020)

across St. Lucie County, FL. The Florida Department of Education’s (2020) EduData Portal

states that in the Fall 2019 there were 419 Black/African American students, 389 White students,

415 Hispanic students, 18 Asian students, and 51 multiracial students. The remaining 10 students

are in other racial groups. Renaissance Charter School of St. Lucie (RCSSL) is open to all

students by application (Renaissance Charter School of St. Lucie, 2020). Families must apply

online and submit an application through the school’s online application portal (Renaissance

Charter School of St. Lucie, 2020). Once the application has been submitted, a lottery is

conducted and families are notified if their child(ren) have been offered a seat (Renaissance

Charter School of St. Lucie, 2020). Once a seat is offered, families must choose to accept or

decline. If a family accepts, then all necessary information (documents, immunizations, proof of

residency, etc.) are required before the student(s) may start school. Applications are accepted

throughout the year and enrollment for the following year is announced online. Families with

questions can reach out to the school for assistance. The school maintains a Facebook, Twitter,

Plan Alignment

Mission, Vision, and Values

Renaissance Charter School of St. Lucie seeks to create a school where students can

achieve and prepare them for the future. The school’s mission, vision, and values are clearly

posted on the school’s homepage (Renaissance Charter School of St. Lucie, 2020), posted

throughout the school, and are clearly visible to anyone entering the school. The Engagement

Plan above was aligned to the school’s mission, vision, and values in mind. The opportunities

created with stakeholders are meant to create unique and engaging opportunities with students,

which will prepare them for the future (tied to mission) and allow to them interact with business

leaders and give them skills necessary for the future (tied to vision). Additionally, with our goals

for communication, RCSSL is striving to create opportunities for all students, no matter if they

are learning in-person or at a distance.

Student Learning as a Priority

As noted in our goals for the current year, student learning takes precedent.

Learning Environment

The COVID pandemic brought a change in how students attend school, but not a change

in high-quality instruction offered at RCSSL. Students have access to their teachers live using
6

Owl Meeting cameras so that teachers can move around their classrooms and not be tied to a

screen while trying to teach. Additionally, with the learning management system Schoology,

students have access to instructional resources at any time, both in-person and virtually.

However, because our school has now essentially become two schools, physical and virtual,

leadership will be launching a Virtual School Team to support virtual learners.
