 We use a / an before countable nouns in the singular.


Example: There’s a chair in the room.
There’s an apple in the basket.
 We use a before words that begin with consonant sounds (b, c, d, f, g, etc.).
Example: a pencil, a boy, a dog, a frog
 We use an before words that begin with vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u).
Example: an apple, an egg, an orange, an umbrella
 We don’t use a / an before an adjective when there isn’t a noun after it.
Example: It’s a doll. It’s pink. It’s a pink doll.

PLAY TIME! – Guess the object!

One of the students chooses a school object in the classroom to describe. The others have to ask and
answer questions to guess what it is. Clues: Is it big? Is it small? Is it red? Is it next to the door?

Example: A: Is it big? A: Yes it is. / No, it isn’t.


A: Is it red? B: Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t.
A: It’s an eraser! B: Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t.

THERE IS / THERE ARE


 There is an apple on the table  There are many apples in the basket.
 There is a doll on the bed.  There are two dolls in the box.

 We use there is in the singular and there are in the plural.

PLURALS la fiecare cuvant o sa fie alternanta de desene 1-2 (1 creion – 2 creioane etc)

*Most nouns take -s to form their plural: *Nouns ending in -s, -ss or -x take -es to form their plurals:

1 pen – 2 pens 1 hen - 2 hens 1 bus – 2 buses


1 pencil – 2 pencils 1 cat – 2 cats 1 glass - 2 glasses
1 ruler - 2 rulers 1 dog – 2 1 box - 2 boxes

*Nouns ending in consonant + y drop the y and take -ies: *Nouns ending in a vowel + y take -s in the plural:

* There is also a special category called irregular plurals:

1. a) Look at the picture and say what there is / there are in the classroom.

2. Look at the picture. Use prompts to ask and answer questions, following the example:

B: No there isn’t. B: Yes, there are.

PLAY TIME! – Guess the object!

The teacher puts different objects in a bag. The students take turns in going to the teacher’s desk and pick
things from the bag. They have to say what there is / there are in it.

THIS / THESE

 We use this / these to talk about people, things, animals which are near us.

THAT / THOSE

That is a cat. (desen 1 pisica+mana departe) Those are cats. (desen 2 pisici+mana departe)

That is a bike. (desen 1 bicicleta+mana departe) Those are bikes. (desen 2 biciclete+mana departe)

 We use that / those to talk about people, things, animals which are far away from us.

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

 We use prepositions of place to say where somebody or something is.

IN + desen stilou in cutie ABOVE + desen stilou deasupra cutiei

ON + desen stilou pe cutie IN FRONT OF + desen stilou in fata cutiei

1. Look at the picture below, then ask and answer, as in the example:

Example: In the first picture, the sofa is next to the fireplace. In the second picture, the sofa is in
front of the window.

Look again at the pictures above, then write where the objects in the room are. Work in teams. Each team
chooses a picture to describe. The team that finishes first is the winner! Use as many prepositions of place
as you can.

Example: There is a sofa next to the fireplace. There is a coffee table in front of the sofa.
