Craig Pearson is swap meet royalty. Along
with his queen, JoAnn, the two have been
fixtures at operating the Zephyrhills Auto
Events at Festival Park. When they roll
through the event on their golf cart, every
vendor takes time to stop them, say hello and
thank them for their hard work to make
the event a success.
Last weekend, more than 5,000 people
came through the gates to enjoy a massive
car show, browse through the large
automotive swap meet and dream at the
famous Classic Car Auction.

bit more on the Festival Park grounds

The Nine-Mile War is in the books with Zephyrhills
taking down Pasco 21-0 in front of a socially distant,
limited crowd at W.F. Edwards Stadium.
The backyard rivalry started with a unifying gesture
with players of both teams entering the field carrying the
American Flag, but it soon became a hard-hitting battle
for bragging rights.
It looks like the Bulldogs will be doing all the bragging
as the stifling Bulldog defense kept the Pirates off the
scoreboard with the scoring offense coming from seniors
Tre Gallimore and Zyre Roundtree.
“It’s important to get this win because all of the
adversity we faced with being stopped by COVID for two
weeks and then three games in eight days,” said proud
Bulldog coach Nick Carroll. “It shows the character of the
kids in how they are willing to fight and believe in what
we’re doing. I’m really happy for them.
“Sometimes we aren’t going to score a ton of points, but
our defense has been lights out all year. That’s a tribute to

As housing construction continues in northern and western
Zephyrhills, there may be more on the horizon.
Zephyrhills City Council approved Staff petitions for
annexation, a future land use map amendment and rezoning of
land that would clear the way for 420 more family units.
One 37.61-acre parcel, located along Tucker Road, will be
rezoned for residential development. There are 18.2 acres of that
parcel proposed to be annexed into the city and rezoned. This

The second parcel of land is within the
Zephyr Commons commercial area, where
the open land south and east of the Publix
Shopping Center and north of Pretty Pond
Road is being proposed for rezoning to make
way for apartments with a maximum of 240
units.
The Tucker Road project petitions were
submitted by Skybird Properties to annex the
portion of the property and rezone it from
County AR-1 to City R3 to allow for medium
density residential development. As part of the
application, the parcel within the City limits
is proposed to be rezoned the same as the
annexation parcel.
Assistant City Planner Rodney Corriveau
reported that a roadway network as well as
water and sewer lines are already available for
that parcel.
The petition for the Zephyr Commons project
calls for approximately 12.29 acres proposed
to be rezoned from Community Commercial to
Multi-Family Residential to “transition Zephyr
Commons into a more diverse mixed-use
center and expand residential housing options
in the city.”
“If there’s a place in this town where that
would work, in my mind it would be there,”
said councilman Lance Smith. “The shopping is
right there. The trip generation would possibly
be decreased to the shopping center because
maybe people living there would walk there.”
While council members appeared supportive
of the project, they stressed that there needs to
be road improvements to assist in handling the
increase in traffic from the Zephyr Commons
development and the current project where
houses are being constructed at Abbott Park.
“If you imagine all those people leaving
for work at the same time every day,” said
councilwoman Jodi Wilkeson, “and you have
that condition all around those roads and those
roads have not been improved significantly, I
am concerned about the experience of those
people getting in and out of those developments
at peak hours.”
City Calls For New Stormwater Plan

It’s no secret that some streets
suffer from flooding during moderate
to heavy rains and the city is ready to
spend nearly a quarter million dollars
to identify problem areas and come up
with solutions through a Stormwater
Master Plan using the latest technology
and modeling practices.
The city’s design engineering
consultant firm, Kimley-Horn,
will develop the plan to provide a
planning level tool to determine flood
risk, evaluate the level of service
and develop the best management
practices to reduce flooding and
improve water quality. The last
Stormwater Management Plan was
conducted in 1999.
The budgeted item will come from
$200,000 budgeted for Stormwater
Professional Services and $75,000
Penny for Pasco funds. The plan will
come in under budget at $249,820.

Following a third quarter interception by Pasco’s Caleb

“After not being able to play last year because I was
sick, to play this year and shut them down on defense was
great,” said senior defensive lineman Brian Ashmore. “It’s
like somebody’s writing a book.”
“That was an important stop because going into the
half, we had to stop their momentum,” said senior nose
tackle Dajuan McCullough. “It was demoralizing. You
could feel them giving up in the second half.”
Roundtree added a six-yard fourth-quarter touchdown
run thanks to being pushed and dragged across the goal
line by his offensive linemen. Rivera added the extra
point, and the Bulldogs extended the lead to 14-0.
Roundtree added a 44-yard run on the next possession
to give the Bulldogs a first-and-goal at the nine. Gallimore
finished off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run at
the 7:53 mark. Rivera was good again and the Bulldogs
wrapped up the scoring and the win 21-0.
Pasco claimed last year’s game 27-9, so the Bulldogs
got their redemption.
“We didn’t play our best football game last year and we
turned the ball over a ton,” Carroll said. “We just weren’t
all there. It’s great to come to Dade City and get a win.”
After the final buzzer, temperatures flared a bit, but
in the end the Nine-Mile War lived up to the traditional
hype. Now it is off to the playoffs. The Bulldogs travel to
face Weeki Wachee Friday in the first round.

“COVID-19 has substantially changed
things,” Pearson said. “We ask everyone to
comply with CDC requirements. We have
changed dramatically with our sanitizing
efforts. We have people here who do
nothing but keep areas sanitized.”
Car culture is alive and well and that
was apparent as vendors proudly displayed
items for sale that are critical to the proper
restoration of a car. However, there are
certain generations that are dedicating the
time to restoring and bringing classic cars
back to life.
“The swap meets are enjoyed by a lot of
people, but it’s not what it was back in the
heyday,” Pearson said. “The young people
today are not interested in the classics like
Ed Swanson of Seffner sat in the
bleachers at the Classic Car Auction. With
his bidders’ card in hand, he had his eye
on a black and gold Pontiac Trans Am,
identical to the great car Burt Reynolds
drove in “Smokey and the Bandit.”
When it hit the auction block, he waited
and waited. Then he pounced with his
card and saw himself getting a tremendous
deal on the iconic car, but the bid was well
below the reserve on the car. He did not
pout long. A Buick Riviera popped up and
the bidding took off. That classic ride went
higher than he was willing to commit.
All-in-all, he was having fun.
“I may not have won those cars, but I’m
having a blast,” Swanson said. “By the look
of most of these prices, this may not be a
good time to be selling cars at an auction.
They are not fetching the numbers they
should be.
“We’ll see what happens in February.”

football team finished a perfect 7-0
season after Thursday night’s 20-0
season-finale win over Cypress Creek.

Hill put the Bulldogs on the board. It
was not until the fourth quarter when
the Bulldogs scored again on a run by
Santana Johnson.
“It was a great season,” said Hill. “All
the hard work started in the summer.
Everybody did what they are supposed
to do.”

unbeaten,” said Campbell. “We’re 7-0.
What else can we say. We have the
best offense. We are definitely going
dominate at the next level.”
To ensure the Bulldogs would
preserve the shutout, Kaden Tanner
registered an interception to shut down
the Coyotes.
“This is a talented group and I told
them at the beginning of the season
that they were going to be something
special,” said coach Raleigh Allen.

only successful because of the hard work
