PERILITE EXPOSURE

DEFINITION:It is the application of dry heat to the perineal area to provide comfort. It
increases blood circulation and hasten wound healing.

IMPORTANCE OF PERILITE EXPOSURE:

1. Relief of pain and muscular spasm
2. Provides comfort by relieve pain
3. It relaxes muscles and capillaries making pain to tolerable
4. Increases blood circulation
5. Hastens wound healing following an episiotomy repair
6. Increases circulation of blood
7. Increases supply of oxygen and nutrients which promotes wound healing
8. Reduces edema and soreness
9. It releases dry heat and thus help reduce edema and soreness
10. 10. Alleviated by relax muscles and capillaries

INDICATIONS:
1. Patients who have undergone rectal or perineal surgery
2. Post-partum patients with episiotomy wounds
3. Patients having vaginal inflammation or bladder spasm
4. Patients with painful or local irritation from hemorrhoids

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
1. Patients with cardiovascular condition
2. Presence of cyst or malignancy in the area
3. Patients with open wounds with hemorrhage
4. Patients with burns or fracture at the lower limbs
5. Heat lamps are contraindicated in pressure ulcer care

PRINCIPLES INVOLCED IN PERILITE EXPOSURE:

1. HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY- through blood vessels and nerves, skin and
connections they make with nerves and blood vessels of bloody, practically all parts of
body maybe influenced by application of heat to skin.
2. MICROBIOLOGY - the applications of heat to open wounds of lesions may rupture
demands a sterile technique.
3. BODY MECHANICS - position of mother is dorsal recumbent with legs and knees flexed
to allow proper exposure of area to be treated.
4. PHYSICS - application of heat employs physical agents: heat, water, and light. Heat
maybe transferred from one place to another by radiation (perilite exposure).

HOT SITZ BATH

DEFINITION: It is a warm, shallow bath that cleanses the perineum, the space between the
rectum and the vulva or scrotum.

PURPOSES:
 Promote healing
 Decreases discomfort from infections of the bladder, prostate, or vagina
 Provide comfort to the patient

Common reasons why you might want to consider using a hot sitz bath include:

 recently having surgery on the vulva or vagina

 recently having given birth
 recently having hemorrhoids surgically removed
 having discomfort from hemorrhoids
 having discomfort with bowel movements

EQUIPMENT:
 Sitz bath tub or basin
 Bath towel
 Bath blanket
 Gown
 Bath thermometer, if available
