Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
For my first professional activity, I attended a BLS certification course through the Campus Rec
Center. I attended this course to recertify myself in BLS and stay up to date with my
certification for my clinical site and university policies. For my second professional activity, I
completed a 4-hour course from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses called
“COVID-19 Pulmonary, ARDS, and Ventilator Resources.” I completed this course to satisfy
some of my required professional activity hours because COVID-19 is such a prominent topic in
our country and unfortunately, many hospitalized patients have been ventilated due to the
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The BLS course was held half online and half in-person at the Campus Rec Center. Altogether,
the BLS certification was 4 hours in length. The COVID-19 Pulmonary, ARDS, and Ventilator
Resources course was a free course offered completely online. This course also totaled 4 hours.
The BLS course was valuable to me as it explained and demonstrated the basics of providing life
support in both inpatient and outpatient settings. It also allowed me to demonstrate my skills of
providing basic life support and allowed me to receive feedback from an instructor during the in-
person course about how I could improve my techniques. I feel that the COVID-19 Pulmonary,
ARDS, and Ventilator Resources course was valuable to me because it gave me further insight
into the progression of respiratory failure and different oxygenation options for patients as well
as how different ventilation settings would improve different patient conditions. I believe that
this course was valuable for me to complete as it will help me monitor patient statuses and
How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
I will continue to use the BLS course throughout my nursing career as it taught me the basics of
how to care for a patient who is experiencing cardiac and/or respiratory arrest. I would be able
to apply my experience from the COVID-19 Pulmonary, ARDS, and Ventilator Resources
course in critical-care settings, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and/or during
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
I would recommend the BLS course I participated in for my professional activity in the future. I
enjoyed having half of the course online as it allowed me to go at my own pace to understand the
content and not feel rushed in the classroom setting. I also enjoyed that my in-person experience
was spent demonstrating skills rather than going over a lot of content that I was able to do in my
own time prior to the course. I also would recommend the COVID-19 Pulmonary, ARDS, and
Ventilator Resources course to any person entering the medical profession who provide care to
patients, especially in critical-care settings. I felt that the information was very easy to
understand but was also very in depth and helped me understand concepts I had learned earlier
