In an organization or company, everyone is expected to be doing what he is supposed to do
during work hours. One must perform according to what is asked of him/her according to the job description given. However, it can not be denied that some employees do not have a clear understanding not only of their job description but also of the goals of the organization. That is why it is important that an organization or company has performance management schemes to follow. Performance management is an ongoing process of communication between a supervisor and an employee that occurs throughout the year, in support of accomplishing the strategic objectives of the organization. The communication process includes clarifying expectations. Setting objectives, identifying goals, providing feedback, and reviewing results. In this way, the supervisor and the employee have a clear direction in terms of achieving the same goal (which will be the organization’s goal) and of course have a better understanding of what really is expected of him so that every employee will be reaching their utmost potentials in the work place. In this case, performance measurement is also necessary.
Another concept discussed is the performance appraisal. it is a systematic evaluation of the
performance of the employees and to understand the abilities of a person for further growth and development. It aims to maintain records in order to determine compensation package, wage structure, salaries raise, etc.; to identify the strengths and weaknesses of employees to place the right men on the job; to provide feedback to employees regarding their performance and related status; and to review and retain the promotional and other training programs. The result of the performance appraisal can be utilized as basis for trainings, who needs a training, what kind of training is needed and the likes, and also for additional compensation such as bonuses and salary increase.
