1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

My BHAG is to revolutionize the way we get food to table by way of the internet of
things. I would like to start and run my own Supply Chain company that specializes in
the produce industry (refrigerated freight). My aim is to revolutionize the way we ship
produce in a global market by leveraging technological advances in RFID, data tracking,
and temperature-controlled units. This will hopefully lead to more intercontinental
shipment of goods feeding those that would otherwise be without access to fresh produce.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

This is my BHAG because I have been in the industry for a few years and have seen mass
spoilage of produce. It pains me to see good food go to waste and I feel that I can make a
difference in how the world ships its produce. After being introduced to supply chain in
the produce industry I have sought a way to make an impact on the industry and I feel
that it is my calling to do so.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

My vision statement is “I will serve others and be humble in my approach. I will seek growth
and strive to gain a mastery in all that I do. I will balance life and seek god in all things.” It
exemplifies my BHAG in two main ways. First is in my service to others, by providing food to
underserved areas by leveraging the technology here in the US. Second by is in seeking growth
and mastery in my career field. I believe that by creating a company on the cutting edge of
shipping and technology I will be at the forefront of my field. This will be in keeping with my
vision of continual growth and development.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

My mission statement is “I will continually seek to serve others and their needs. Providing for
the poor and disenfranchised and to provide shelter to those in need.

I will be humble in all things to include service. I will continually monitor myself and ask others
to remind myself to be humble in all my accomplishments. I will continue to do for others
regardless of the response.

I will constantly seek growth. That includes Family, career, and personal goals. I will not settle,
and I will not give up when the going gets tough. I will perceiver and I will grow.

When I set my mind on something, I will master my craft. I will not falter in adversity but
instead remain focused and keep trying even if mastery does not come.

1
I will seek balance and harmony in my life. I will make time for all of those that make time for
me. I will seek those that do not and offer an olive branch. I will spend as much time with my
family as I do my job. I will prioritize family over work.

I will praise god for all that he has given me. I will make sure to make time for him and those
that worship him.”

In my mission statement I expand on my vision by seeking growth and mastering my craft. As

supply chain is my craft, I would be keeping with my mission in further developing my skills and
knowledge of the subject through seeking to make food supply chains more efficient and
productive. I will also seek service and the ultimate goal of my BHAG is to serve underserved
areas around the world.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

1) My biggest obstacle is putting myself in a position ether within a company or through

my own capital to implement my ideas. This can present several obstacles in vision
and mission if I were to join an already established organization. In raising enough
capital to establish my own company there are several obstacles to overcome, those
being investors, banks, and lines of credit for an unproven technology and business.

2) Obstacle 2 is finding others to assist in my vision who put people before profits. This
company and its employees would have to understand that I would be seeking this not
for tremendous capital gain, but to bring healthy food to the world.

3) My third obstacle is finding Retailers, farms, and shipping companies to participate.

As I am already connected in this area It will not be insurmountable, but it is an
obstacle that will take careful negotiation and salesmanship.

4) My fourth obstacle would be technology. Most of the technology is already in place

but is not currently being used for serious block chaining and or shared data. That
means that programs must be written, and technology must be leveraged in a way to
track the produce, and in return furnish useable data such as time elapsed, barometric
pressure, humidity, and temperature. This technology exists but cost needs to be
managed and data needs to be managed, this presents an obstacle.

2
5) Finally, the last obstacle is me. I must remain focused on my goal and not give into
temptation to cut corners. This service will take tremendous time, energy, and effort
to make it effective and viable in today’s market. If I am to succeed, I need to
dedicate myself to my pursuit and passion and deliver upon my promise.

3
Section 2: Career Vision
Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

My career I believe is slightly organizational with protean aspects. The slight

organizational comes from my wanting control over the finished product. I do not like to
leave things to chance and prefer to have it done in a transparent but fair manner. The
protean aspect comes in when I think of the freedom to make decisions within the
company. Although I want the final product to be at a high level, I also want a high level
of autonomy within the company. This I believe is the best approach to an organization.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

As I move up in my career, I see myself moving more towards the produce industry and
finding a company that will let me explore my BHAG. This may be in a company or a
side business I start myself. The side business will be a possible alternate career path.
This would be the most likely as this alternate affords me complete control on service
implementation and follow through. It allows me the freedom to put into practice without
board oversight. This would be ideal for my BHAG.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I see myself working an as needed schedule. This could mean out of normal business
hours. Logistics never sleeps and as such odd hours are expected within this field of
work.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as

4
SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the
following time periods:

a. 2 years from today

i. Supply Chain Manager, The Nutrition Group Inc.

The job is for a nutrition organization focusing on serving the

underprivileged. It is in line with both my mission and vision and BHAG
in that it fills in the necessity to help with the produce industry. It also
remains in my current field of Supply chain and I am qualified for the
position.

ii. Food industry Buyer, Human Capital Resource.

Although a buyer is a step backward this position would offer me direct

produce buying experience. Sometimes in order to take a step forward we
must take a step back. I believe this role would allow me to explore the
buying level needed in the produce industry so that I can be more effective
leading my own company.

b. 5 years from today

i. Food Service Supply Chain Manager, The Nutrition Group Inc.

This is similar to the supply chain manager at 2 years except it focuses

solely on food and not on the totality of the company. This would put in
prime position to learn more about the nuances of the produce supply
chain market. IT would support the BHAG by giving me more hands-on
experience in the market I would like to be in.

ii. Director of private brands, MDI.

This position would give me director level roles in influencing some of the
major brands and their shipping processes. This would help in
understanding farms and receivers in order to best facilitate my BHAG.

c. 10 years from today

i. Vice President of Fresh Foods, Festival Foods.

This position would allow me to start learning the executive level of

produce and meats. This would allow me to fulfill the final piece of being
able to understand the executive level leadership to lead a company of the
future. They are heavy on servant leadership, which I believe in, and the
role would teach me how to lead in this environment while exposing me to
a broader understanding of shipping principals. My BHAG would come to
life in this role as I would have direct authority to make and influence
change within a company.

ii. Starting of my company and seeking capital investment.

At the 10-year mark I would like to start putting the technology and
business together by seeking capitol and investors. This is where all of my
previous experience would be leveraged in order to start the process on
fulfilling my BHAG.

d. BHAG Achievement Year

i. CEO of my own company.

This is the stage in which I would branch off on my own and start
returning investments by gaining capitol and implementing my strategy.
This stage would be the lifelong fulfillment process. It would allow me to
accomplish my dream of being a CEO while helping those less fortunate
and implementing technology to do so. This would marry all my passions
and allow me to full fill my BHAG.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. Establish more credibility in the produce profession by sourcing a different

position.
2. Starting a specific Savings account for the business.
3. Understand the technology and how it works
4. Start sourcing the technology needed to fulfill the BHAG
5. Get a higher position to start understanding the executive level of Produce
Shipping
6. Reach out to potential investors to determine interest.
7. Do a market analysis for the service
8. Start an LLC
9. Finalize investors
10. Quit job and start fulltime at the company.

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

1. Money, through sacrificing personal savings and other long-term investments I will
be able to raise more capital. This will help me in not giving away so much equity in
the company when first starting out.

2. Security, I have preferred the security that an organization provides. I will have to
sacrifice this in order for me to venture out on my own. This is no small sacrifice as I
have children and dependents who rely on me to provide for them.

3. Vacations, I enjoy taking small vacations and with the necessity for capitol and time I
will be required to forgo them in order for me to realize my BHAG. This would mean
that my family would also have to sacrifice with me.

7
Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.

Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Start my own company which serves others and holds true to my BHAG, vision, and
mission.

(Insert your #1 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in
terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).

a. The goal entails me starting the LLC and establishing myself in the produce
shipping market. Both in a broker sense and as a provider of service and logistics
consulting.

b. I will measure my progress in terms of capitol, technology, LLC startup, and

progress towards further education in terms of career choices and classes.

c. This is attainable because I am already into the market and area in which my goal
falls. I have been in the industry for at least 10 years and have finally reached a
point where I feel I can make an impact.

d. This matters to me because it is part of the three keys of joy. It is what brings me
joy, I am good at it, and it is what the world needs of me. It also is something that
I feel would help others throughout the world. It will hopefully make an impact
on not only food waste but people’s lives.

e. The goal will be realized inside of 15 years from today. I feel like I have already
started the process, but I feel I require just a little more career guidance and

8
mentorship in order to fulfill my goal. Therefore, I feel that 15 years is an
attainable time and would allow me to fully explore this before it is realized.

2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

To be the best financial provider I can be to my family until they are adults.

(Insert your #2 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in
terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).

a. I plan on sending my son to college and to provide him with a full ride tuition
account. This would include lodging and healthcare. In order to do so I have
started a savings account which will provide him with the basics. I have also,
started it for incidentals such as books, travel, etc. My goal is to contribute at
minimum $85,000 in an account before his high school graduation. This would
not include interest

9
b. I will measure my progress through account and year check points. At certain
years I will need an amount in order to reach my goals

c. This is attainable by sacrificing a portion of my income to the savings account and

by carefully calculating a budget based on this and other goals.

d. This matters to me because this was not provided for me. It was a huge goal for
me to go to school only to find out I could not afford it even with scholarships. I
needed to go to the military to provide it for myself. I would like my son not to
have to struggle as I have had to pay for my education.

e. The goal has been started since 2012 when my son was born but the period
timetables for checking are every 2 years until his 18th birthday I have calculated a
savings of $7,100 per year in order for me to reach my goals.
