Ionic bonding

Project
Group 3
Valence electrons
Valence electrons are the electrons
of the outermost shell of an
electron. Atoms want to have 8
electrons on the outermost shell
and when they have less then 8
they become increasingly less
stable so that an atom with 1
valence electron is much less stable
than one with 8.

I met a depressed electron the other

day...
He wasn't very positive.
Ionic Bonds

ionic bonds are formed between

a metal and a nonmetal, a
compound that is formed via
ionic bonds has no charge. The
reason atoms form ionic bonds
is to become stable.

What's the difference between a seal and a

sea lion?
One electron.
Naming Ionic compounds

Steps to naming ionic compounds

- Write the metals element symbol then the non-metals after
- Cross the charges to become subscripts
Steps to write an ionic compound name with the symbol
- Find the metal on the periodic table and write it first
- Write the charge of the metal if it is one of the transition metals
- Write the first syllable of the nin metal+ide after the metal
Did you hear oxygen went on a date
with potassium?
It went OK.
Real life applications

Some real life examples of Ionic bonds are:

- Sodium Chloride (NaCl) also known as common table salt.

- Sodium Fluoride (NaF) commonly used in toothpaste.
- Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3) Is baking soda ( used in baking).
- Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3) used in cleaning.

These are just some examples of Everyday ionic bonds

Does anyone know a joke
about sodium?
