GeoMetrics is evaluating the GeoGauge for the SCDOT as the means for
base and subgrade quality control on a 26 mile new highway construction in
coastal SC (the Carolinas Parkway). At various points in construction,
pavement test sections will be used to assign properties that will be used to
assure the quality of the remaining construction. The soils represented were
primarily A-2 and A-3-4 silty sands. The GeoGauge modulus was related to
CBR. CBR was related to the Soil Support Value (coefficient of subgrade
reaction ), which the SCDOT specified.

A confidence interval of GeoGauge modulus is to be related to an interval of

CBR and eventually replace CBR as confidence in the GeoGauge builds
during construction. This is intended to provide the SCDOT with a faster,
more comprehensive way of assuring base and subgrade quality.

Approximately 1/3 of the data was reviewed to develop the correlation

between CBR and GeoGauge modulus. Some anomalies were found in the
data suggesting inconsistent seating of the GeoGauge and insufficient
anchoring of molded CBR samples. When the data associated with these
anomalies was excluded, the correlation was good (R2 ~ 0.6)

Figure 1 shows the correlation between GeoGauge field measurements of

modulus and the modulus derived GeoGauge measurements on molded CBR
samples from GeoGauge test locations. Note that the lab measurements
were made while the 6" O.D. samples were in the mold and unsoaked. Each
molded samples was rigidly anchored prior to placing the GeoGauge on the
sample.

Figure 2 shows the correlation between the modulus derived from CBR
measurements and GeoGauge measurements of modulus on the same
molded CBR samples. The GeoGauge measurements were made with the
samples in the unsoaked condition.
