I. PEFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
Identify two organizational structures, describe each briefly and give an example
of each using a schematic diagram or drawing. (35 points)

ANSWER:

LINE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - is one of the simplest type of organizational

structure. Its authority flows from top to bottom. Unlike other structures, specialized and
supportive services do not take place in these organizations. The main advantage of a line
organizational structure can be identified as the effective communication that brings stability to
the organization.

MATRIX ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - the reporting relationships are set up as a grid,

or matrix, rather than in the traditional hierarchy. It is a type of organizational management in
which people with similar skills are pooled for work assignments, resulting in more than one
manager to report to (sometimes referred to as solid line and dotted line reports, in reference to
traditional business organization charts). For example, all engineers may be in one engineering
department and report to an engineering manager. But these same engineers may be assigned to
different projects and might be reporting to those project managers as well. Therefore some
engineers might have to work with multiple managers in their job role.

II. Essay
As a head nurse of the medical surgical unit, what type of planning should you
consider for yourself and the staff members? (7 points)

ANSWER:
- Every hospital faces unique challenges, and there’s no single design solution for
any specific hospital. However, there are common elements and departmental
relationships that should be maintained at most hospitals. Our healthcare team has
to have a developed understanding of a hospital's key departments to effectively
plan and design an efficient and patient-friendly environment. I’ll focus on
planning a surgery department in a hospital. With that in mind, Design
Collaborative’s mission – to improve people’s worlds – is the first thing our
healthcare team would think about when we begin designing. To achieve our
mission, we focus on how we can:
 Reduce stress for patients, family, and staff
 Maximize Infection Prevention
 Promote efficient and timely care
 Accommodate current and future technology and procedures
 Provide a healthy environment
