The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed more people than the Great War, known today as World
War I (WWI), at somewhere between 20 and 40 million people. It has been cited [ˈsaɪtɪd] as the most
devastating ( DEVESTEITING) epidemic in recorded world history. Known as "Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe"
was a global disaster.

At the time, there were no effective drugs or vaccines to treat this killer flu strain. Citizens were ordered
to wear masks, schools, theaters and businesses were shuttered(SHATID) and bodies pailed up in
makeshift morgues(MOOGS) before the virus ended its deadly global march.MACH

The first wave of the 1918 pandemic occurred in the spring and was generally mild(MAILD). The sick,
who experienced such typical flu symptoms as chills, fever and fatigue,(FETIG) usually recovered after
several days, and the number of reported deaths was low.

However, a second, highly wave of influenza appeared in the fall of that same year. Victims died within
hours or days of developing symptoms, their skin turning blue and their lungs filling with fluid that

People were struck with illness on the street and died rapid deaths. One news shared of 1918 was of
four women playing bridge together late into the night. Overnight, three of them died from influenza
(Hoagg). Others told stories of people on their way to work suddenly developing the flu and dying within
hours. The physicians of the time were helpless against this powerful agent of influenza. The flu took a
heavy human toll, wiping out entire families and leaving countless widows and orphans(OFENS) in its
way. Many people had to dig graves for their own family members

By the summer of 1919, the flu pandemic came to the end, as those that were infected either died or

I hope that this fact has at least calmed the panic among those who are afraid of the coronavirus, there
have been diseases in the history much worse, that people coped(КОУПД) anyway. So don’t worry!
