Course Description
Business Communications is the third course in the Business and Technology pathway in the Business
Management and Administration cluster. In this course, students will explore the value of communication in
their personal and professional life. Students will create, edit, and publish professional-appearing business
documents with clear and concise communication. Creative design along with persuasive personal and
professional communications will be applied though research, evaluation, validation, written, and oral
communication. Leadership development and teamwork skills will be stressed as students work
independently and collaboratively. Presentation skills will be developed and modeled for students to master
presentation software in this course. Professional communication skills and practices, problem-solving, ethical
and legal issues, and the impact of effective presentation skills are enhanced in this course to prepare students
to be college and career ready. Employability skills are integrated into activities, tasks, and projects
throughout the course standards to demonstrate the skills required by business and industry.

Students completing the Business, Management and Administration pathway will take the
End of Pathway Assessment (EOPA). The EOPA is administered through the Microsoft Office
Specialist PowerPoint Exam.

FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA (FBLA)


FBLA is a co-curricular student organization that plays an integral part in the components of
the Business & Technology course standards. FBLA activities are incorporated throughout this
course and the rest of the Business and Computer Science courses. Students are strongly
urged to join FBLA to benefit from the wealth of opportunities the organization has to offer.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN:

Discipline Procedure
Step 1 – 1st Offense Warning from teacher/Student Conference
Step 2 – 2nd Offense Student/Teacher Conference (writing assignment given by teacher)
Step 3 – 3rd Offense Parent Conference (telephone, in-person, or email); referral to advisor
Step 4- 4th Offense School wide Detention
Step 5 – 5th Offense Discipline referral to the office

*Major offenses will be referred to the appropriate administrator immediately.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTIONAL LEARNING:


The instructor will utilize the following methods for meeting learning objectives for the units of the course.

GRADING:
All grades will be out of 100 points. Summative (55%), Formative (30%) and Professionalism (15%).
A: 90-100
B: 80-89
C: 70-79
F: 0-69 (Will not earn course credit)

MAKE-UP WORK:
Students are given 3 days after an absence to complete all assignments. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ASKING
THE TEACHER FOR MAKE-UP WORK AND MAKING UP MISSED WORK WITHIN 3 DAYS.

TARDY POLICY:
Students are expected to be in their assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. Students who are tardy will be
disciplined according to classroom discipline tracker.
CLASSROOM RULES
1. Be on time (in your seat when the tardy bell rings).
2. Bring your own supplies to class every day.
3. Maintain a positive, respectful attitude with the teacher and fellow students.
4. Dress appropriately according to school guidelines.
5. Be respectful of the textbooks, desks, equipment, and other people’s belongings.
6. Report any computer problems to the teacher immediately.
7. Abide by the computer lab rules.
8. Stay in your seat and do not disturb others.
9. Refrain from talking and primping in the classroom.
10. Profanity will not be tolerated.
11. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed out at all in the classroom.
12. Leave your work area clean every day.
13. Listen to all directions.
