The relevance of topic: “The role of UN in ensuring international security at present stage”

at 3 levels.

1. International level:

The relevance of the chosen topic at international level is justified by the simple fact that
the role of international organizations nowadays is bigger than ever before, especially of United
Nations. Due to the effect of globalization processes, international organizations tend to infiltrate
in every aspect of the global life, and the complicated domain of international security is not an
exception at all. On the contrary, this particular aspect is now relying on the UN more than ever
because of the nature of the modern system of international relations, which is now characterized
by unprecedented degree of interconnection. I. Ignatieva points out that the realities of the
modern world testify to the fact that international security now is multifaceted and
comprehensive; the security of one state is connected with the security of the world community
as a whole.1That’s why the states have no choice but to search for some mechanisms of ensuring
their common security, including UN system. For the basis of all relations between states on the
maintenance of peace and security is the principle of cooperation.2

2. Regional level:

The relevance of the chosen topic at regional level is justified by the fact that on
European continent international security is by far the biggest concern today, because of
outbreaks of instability as a result of political or territorial disputes, ethnic and religious tensions,
which can degenerate into military conflicts of various magnitudes. Unresolved conflicts in the
Caucasus, the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, the annexation of Crimea and
the conflict in southeastern Ukraine are severely affecting the regional security environment.
Sources of potential regional tensions are the uncertain status of Kosovo and Northern Cyprus.
Therefore, understanding of the degree of international organizations impact on it may
help understand the very essence of international security as it is today, in order to prevent or/and
solve security disputes. And can also help see how it may develop in the future in order to
prevent future security theats.

 3. National level:
The relevance of the chosen topic at the level of Republic of Moldova is justified by the
fact that from the beginning of its existence, the Republic of Moldova continues to be the target
of risks and threats that may endanger the existence of the state and national security. Thus, a
series of economic threats affect the vital interests of the person and of society in the fields of
energy, food, ecology, demography, information, etc.
Despite the relative decline of military threats in their classic form for most European
countries, the Republic of Moldova continues to be in an uncertain situation in the face of
traditional military risks and threats. Political and territorial separatism, attempts at ethnic,
religious, linguistic or cultural division remained a major obstacle in the process of state
consolidation and reintegration of Moldovan society. Manifested in isolation or cumulation, the
mentioned risks and threats seriously affect the integrity and national unity, implicitly the
development course of the Republic of Moldova, as a country engaged in the process of
European integration.
