To Whom It May Concern:

Christen Bowen: Remember the proverb "still waters run deep"? So that is what you need to
remember when you interview Christen-hopefully, in person. She may seem somewhat reticent
at first; however, beneath that quiet exterior is a determined, focused, caring person. Christen
has worked continually in healthcare for the last five years starting as a CNA on the junior
college level to a BSN graduate-to-be. That perseverance, determination, and broad experience
positions Christen to "hit the ground running". These plus an academic award winning education
at one of the better BSN programs in the nation describe just the kind of grad you want to bring
on board soon.

Christen was my student during her 10 week psychiatric/mental health nursing clinical rotation
last semester. As a clinical instructor/lecturer with fifty years experience in various psych
nursing areas, I have a unique opportunity to become acquainted with my students as
individuals. Since they're learning to use their own personalities as a therapeutic tool, I try to
help them get to know themselves more in depth and as members of a team on our four unit
inpatient facility. During our psych rotation, they also experience working with older adults,
pediatric therapy services, and intensive adult outpatient services. My goal for them is to
practice interpersonal relationship skills that can be generalized and applied to any nursing
endeavor they choose.

Now the usual (but true) description of the strengths and attributes that Christen will bring to
your organization: 1) a broad and in depth nursing knowledge base; 2) highly developed
technical/technology abilities; 3) excellent verbal/written communication skills and finally; 4) an
appreciation of the value of the continued application of evidenced-based nursing practice.

So, just review Christen's educational and experience resume. She demonstrated her
leadership skills early on, even as a CNA when she was trusted to orient and preceptor hires at
Banner University Hospital. Not surprisingly, her lead by example or from behind style was
evident when her fellow nursing students would anticipate and respect her opinion/interpretation
of what had transpired on our psych units. If you are looking for a highly disciplined, hard
working, healthcare provider whose moral compass is on straight and whose heart is in the right
place, Christen Bowen is the one!
