Unit 01: Understanding the World of Thermodynamics

1.) Give an example each of an isolated, closed and an open system. Explain how you
classified the systems.
Types of System in Thermodynamics:
a. Isolated System – an isolated system is classified when it is not capable of
exchanging both matter and energy with its surroundings.
Example: A Thermos flask is an example for this because a thermos does not allow
matter transfer because it has a lid that does not allow anything to enter or leave the
container.
b. Closed System – a closed system is classified when it does not allow the exchange of
matter but allows energy to be transferred.
Example: An example of this is a pressure cooker.
c. Open System – an open system can be classified when it can exchange both energy
and matter with its surroundings.
Example: An example of this is a stovetop because heat and water vapor can be lost
to the air.

2.) Give two examples each of intensive and extensive properties of a system.
Intensive Properties:
 Temperature
 Refractive Index
Extensive Properties:
 Mass
 Volume

3.) In your own words, define state function.

 State Function is a thermodynamic property whose value does not depend on the path
function or the path taken to reach the specific value.

4.) State the Boyle’s Law on ideal gases. What kind of thermodynamic process did the
gas underwent when Boyle conducted the experiment?
 Boyle’s Law tells us that the volume of gas increases as the pressure decreases.
 The thermodynamic process the gas underwent when Boyle conducted the experiment
was the Flow Process.
