Name: Answer Key
Directions: Visit each of the links below and view the episode of “The Science of NFL Football.” There is a
separate video for each of Newton’s three laws of motion. Answer the following questions from each video.

Newton’s First Law (Link: http://bit.ly/2raOGoa)

1. In football we see unbalanced forces when one player exerts an unbalanced force
(hits) on another player and causes that player to change his direction or speed.
2. In physics, a player’s natural resistance to an unbalanced force is called inertia
3. How are mass and weight different?
Mass is a measure of how much matter an object has, while weight is a measure of
how strongly an object’s mass is attracted by gravity
4. If a player has more mass they will also have more inertia.

Newton’s Second Law (Link: http://bit.ly/2HAPcqD)

5. What is the formula for Newton’s Second Law?

Force = mass x acceleration
6. Impulse is just a change in momentum.

Newton’s Third Law (Link: http://bit.ly/2HCsAC1)

7. Newton’s third law is sometimes called? Action/reaction law

8. Newton’s third law has to do with momentum. The formula for momentum is?
P= MV
9. According to Newton’s third law, is the total momentum the same after the two
players collide?
yes
