ME 407-001

Fall 2020
Project
Due Officially November 20th
Accepted thru December 4th

Objective: Design an HVAC system for the following Office Building located in Tuscaloosa, AL.
Please provide this as a prospect bid (cost is not a factor) that is less than 15 pgs. For the report, I
want to see sample calculations, load break downs for each individual zone (wall/roof, windows,
people, infiltration, latent vs. sensible, etc.), assumptions (including assumptions I provided), air
distribution design. This includes the following:
1. Load Calculations (sensible and latent)
2. Number and size of HVAC units (tons) (only worry about cooling and not heating)
3. Diffuser Location and Sizing
4. Ductwork sizing and network (duct lengths)
5. Ventilation Requirements for each room
6. SHRload for each HVAC unit you use

Primary Supply
Zone Use People
(cfm)
1 Office 6 350
2 Break 2 650
3 Office 2 150
4 Conference 8 900
5 Bathrooms 1 64

Building Information
• Walls are made of masonry brick, 4” insulation, and 8” LW Block
• Windows are 3’ x 6’ Double Pane 1/8 in. ε = 0.2 wood framed with light blinds
• Door is 80” x 36” x 1 ¾” without a storm door (select from Table 7.1)
• Roof is flat with 4” rigid insulation (outside layer), 4” of concrete and suspended acoustic
tile 1’ below bottom of concrete.
• Interior Wall heights are 10’

Interior Loads
• Each person in the offices has a computer
• There is a laser printer for every 2 computers
• Break Room has a refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker, and water cooler,
• Conference Room has a computer with 19” monitor and other equipment equivalent to 3
large office printers
• For lighting use the density/ft2 method

Assumptions
• Infiltration rate of o.3 cfm/ft2 of exterior wall
• Duct loss equivalent to 10% of total sensible load (i.e. multiply the sensible load of entire
building by 0.1)
