DESIGNED FOR ETERNITY

The Undiscovered Tomb of Tutankhamun

BASED ON THE WORK OF BERNARD I. PIETSCH
BY SUZANNE THOMPSON

Of the many “wonderful things” Howard Carter

saw when he opened the tomb of Tutankhamun,
there was one treasure that escaped his
attention--the intelligent architecture of the tomb
itself. What he and other Egyptologists did not
realize was the wealth of knowledge concealed in
the angles, lengths, areas and volumes of the
tomb’s design. The information written into the
empty tomb abides--and can be read. The
recovery of that information is the subject of this
investigation.
Cartera believed the architect of Tutankhamun’s
tomb to have been an official named Maya,
known as the “Overseer of Works in the Place of
Eternity.” The title is a fitting one, as what was
encoded in the design of the tomb could be
considered “eternal” in nature and more enduring
than all the artifacts the tomb contained. The
precious objects buried with the king were
“surrounded” by equally artful objects of the mind--ideas signified by number,
geometry and the instruments of an ancient system of measure.
Contrary to Carter’s observation that KV62 was “the smallest and the most
insignificant” tomb in the Valley of the Kings, we propose that when examined
by the discerning eye, Tutankhamun’s tomb will prove to be as extraordinary
as the treasures it contained. When deciphered, the silent walls of this little
tomb will speak volumes about the “Heaven” into which Tutankhamun was
commended and about the Earth from which he came. But first, let us look to
the tomb itself and to the design principles from which it was drawn.

Observations
I. The design is initiated from a single concept.
1. Tutankhamun’s tomb is unified by a single invisible construct
communicated through number. It is a number which addresses both the
concept of Heaven and the concept of Earth while simultaneously
connecting the largest measure of the tomb with the smallest. The
timelessness of “Heaven” and the physicality of Earth are expressed
indirectly by the volume of the tomb’s empty space. The number is
9,771.44146--the total number of cubic feet in the tomb’s chambers.
Variations on this number are found in different forms and features
throughout the tomb. The reciprocal expression of Heaven is Earth.
Earth, grounded in time, is identified by the same number associated with
Heaven, but divided by 1,000. It is the number 9.77144146.

9.77144146 corresponds directly to

the human heart-beat and is
modeled by the action of the
swinging pendulum. A pendulum
that is 9.77144146 inches in length
has a period or beat, like the heart,
of one second of time or 60 beats
per minute. Thus, the number
9.77144146 links the physiology of
the human being to time through
measure.b The organizing principle
of the design is, from the heart so
to speak, one second of time.
2. Beyond the Stairway and
Descending Passage there are four Tomb Plan
more rooms in the interior of the
tomb.

(See detailed measures of tomb in Appendix III and Appendix IV.)

b
Whether as 9.771441472, or .9771441472 or 97.71441472, this number appears in numerous
places in the Pyramid and other structures. Hatshepshut’s obelisk at Karnak is 97.71441472 feet high.
In Luxor there were two obelisks dedicated to Ramses. The first was 977.1441472 inches in height. If
the height of that obelisk were used as the length of a pendulum, the time of its swing forth and back
would be 10-seconds. The second smaller obelisk, now in Paris at the Place de la Concord, is 77.74
feet high. If the length of its height were a pendulum, its period would be 9.771441472 seconds. Also,
Hatshepshut’s obelisk at Karnak is 97.71441472 feet high. Note in each, the inter-twining of the
physics of the pendulum, the number 10 and the units of canon of measure.

2
THE UNDISCOVERED TOMB OF TUTANKHAMUN ©BERNARD I. PIETSCH AND S. THOMPSON 2021

On the other side of the Antechamber is a small room called the Annex.
The height of the Annex divided by the width of the chamber is
.977144147:

100.0838934" height of Annex

= .977144147
102.4249019" width of Annex

3. The volume of the Annex is 1,023.390462 cubic feet. The reciprocal of

this number, multiplied by 104 , is the same number as the length of the
one second pendulum: 9.771441472 inches--another reference to one
second of time. Notice: even though scale and metrics change, number
order is preserved.
1 = .000977144147
1,023.390462 (Vol. of Annex)
.000977144147 x 104 = 9.771441472 (Inches one sec pendulum)

4. The architecture of the Annex integrates time, length and volume in yet
another way. When the number associated with the cubic volume of the
Annex, 1,023.390462, is multiplied by 12 and reduced by 104, it renders
the same number as the number of feet in the length of a pendulum
whose period is coincident with its length. In other words, a pendulum
1.228068554 feet long will beat forth and back one time in 1.228068554
seconds.

1,023.390462 x 12 = 12,280.68554 / 104 = 1.228068554 feet or seconds.

5. The number 1.228068554 is nodal. It indicates both a measure of length

(feet) and a measure of time (seconds)--a link secured by the action of
the pendulum. As an empirical demonstration in time, 1.228068554
indirectly validates the number 12 and its utility as inches in the foot.

6. The integration of canon units extends beyond measures of time, and

linear lengths, and includes commensurability with weights and material
density. In the canon system, the number 977.1441472 (Observation #1)
signifies the number of ounces in one cubic foot of waterc.

II. Design confirms location

7. Although invisible to visitor or archaeologist, the function of the number
10, contributes an additional “essential” dimension to the site: the
location of the tomb on the Earth. By using the reciprocal of the natural
logarithm of 10, the architect directs us toward the geographic

coordinates of the tomb. By way of the sine of the angle of its latitude, we
can locate the distance of the tomb from the equator.
10-℮ = 2.302585093
_____1 = .4342944819
2.302585093

When read as the sine of an angle, .4342944819 becomes the decimal

expression of the angle 25.7404° . Read sexagesimally, 25.7404° is
25 degrees 44 minutes 25 seconds, which is the modern GPS-defined
latitude of KV62.
We can make an additional observation relative to the pervasiveness of
the number 10, its attributes and why it is so revered in ancient
metrology. During the time it takes a 10-foot pendulum to swing forth and
back once, the Earth will have rotated through 5,258.16 feet on the
equator. 5,258.16 is the number of feet in one canon mile--further
evidence of the inter-relatedness of the physics of the pendulum, the
number 10 and the canon of measure.d We would not be surprised to
find after further assessment, that many of the tombs in the Valley of the
Kings had been organized around a single point of reference, whether
mathematical, geographic or astronomical in origin. e

8. To the ancient mind, knowledge of the equator would have been essential
in identifying ones place on the Earth and orientation in the universe.
Evidence from KV62 and other sites suggests that the circumference of
the Earth was known to the builders and enshrined in the tomb. The
“key” to this information and to Tutankhamun’s tomb is tacitly activated
in the very first step one takes into the tomb.
The key that unlocks the design is hidden in the diagonal distance
between each of the 16 steps leading to the inner chambers. It is the
measure of 9.85905 inches or 1/4th canon meterf--a fundamental unit
which will be used to decipher other features in the tomb.
39.4362" canon meter = 9.85905" between step edges.
4

d
The canon of measure as we define it, is an emergent system, characterized by the underlying
integration of number and geometry with natural phenomena. Derivatives of its expression are found in
ancient monumental works all over the world. In this presentation, references to units of measure defer
to canon definitions. Generations of observation and recognition would have been necessary to build
the data base of astronomical and physical information reflected by the acuity of the canon of measure.
e
In a future report, indications from our preliminary analysis will show that the direction and
altitude of the entrance passage into Tut’s tomb was purposefully aligned with a significant
astronomical conjunction.

One canon meter: 39.4362" ÷ 12 = 3.28635 feet

9. When the 16 steps are taken together, the total length of the slope of the
Stairs is 157.7448 inches:

16 steps x 9.85905 inches = 157.7448 inches in the slope of the Stairway.

The length of the slope of the Stairs, 157.7448" x 107

is a direct referent to the canon designation for the
circumference of the Earth at the equator:
1,577,448,000 inches. 1,577,448,000 inches divided by
12 = 131,454,000, the number of feet on the equator.
The stairs are the measure of the Earth, a major theme
of the tomb.

10. A second equatorial citation is written into the length of the Descending
Passage. Measured from the threshold at the bottom of the Stairway to
the threshold of the Antechamber, the Descending Passage is 25 feet
long. Expanded by 1000, the Passage represents the circumference of
the Earth in canon miles:
25 x 103 = 25,000 canon miles in the equator.

11. It is of note that the number of cubic inches in the volume of the
Descending Passage divided by its length conceals a physiological
source of canon measure: the ratio of the number of heartbeats to one
breath. The number of canon heartbeats in one minute (60) divided by
the number of canon breaths in one minute (17.43228848) is 3.441888.g
1032.566666 cu. ft volume of Descending Passage = 3.441888 (heart to breath ratio)
300 inches in Descending passage

12. When the number of feet in the length of the Descending Passage (25')
is converted to canon meters (3.28635' per meter, Observation #8), a
third indication of the Earth’s circumference emerges.h The reciprocal of
the number of canon meters, 7.60722382 x 109 is the same number as
the number of feet in the circumference of the Earth at the equator:
131,454,000.

g
In 3.441888 seconds of time the Earth rotates through 5,162.83333 feet on the equator. (3.441888
sec. x 1500 ft/sec = 5,162.83333 feet). In one canon day (87,636 seconds) there would be 25,461.60
canon breaths. (87,636 x 3.441888 = 25,461.60) 25,461.6 is coincident with the number of canon
years (360 days/year) in the precessional cycle of the equinoxes. The breath is precession.
h
Variants of the number 7.60722382 appear in numerous ancient sites, most notably the Great Pyramid.
See Appendix I for examples of evidence of the continuity of a canon tradition.

= .131454000
7.60722382
.131454000 x 109 = 131,454,000' Earth’s equator.

In the Burial Chamber, the width of the chamber at 13.1454 feet reprises
the slant length of the Stairway at 13.1454 feet, once again an
indication of the Earth’s circumference at the equator 131,454,000 feet.
(Observation #9)
13. In Observation #3, we derived the second of time from the pendulum.
Now, drawing on the number of feet in the equator, (Observation #9)
divided by the canon number of seconds in one day, we find that in
one second of time, the Earth rotates 1500 feet on the equator—the
same number expressed by the cubic volume of the Treasury: 1500.
131,454,000 feet canon equator = 1500 feet rotation per second
87,636 seconds in canon day.

14. The dimensions of the Antechamber uniquely prefigure the volume of the
Earth. Carter reported the volume of the room as approximately 2,637.00
cubic feet on average. We propose that the perfect intended volume of
the Antechamber, detailed below, is 2,637.911275 cubic feet—a slight
difference given the roughly hewn surfaces of the masonry.
25.70191945' L x 11.71148804' W x 8.7636' H = 2,637.911275 cu. ft.

In order to compare the volume of the Antechamber, (2,637.911275

cubic feet) with the number for the volume of the Earth, the volume of
the sphere of the Earth must first be calculated. To solve for volume,
divide circumference, 25,000 canon miles, by π to find diameter. (We
use canon π at 3.141986363.) Divide the diameter by 2 to find the
radius. Cube the radius, multiply by π then divide by .75 to find the
volume:
25,000 canon miles circum. = 7,956.75 canon miles diameter.
3.141986363 canon π
7,956.75 / 2 = 3,978.375 canon miles radius.
3,978.3753 = 6.296760110
6.296760110 x π = 1.978433411
1.978433411 / .75 = 2.63791127511 cu. canon miles vol. Earth.

6

Notice the similarity between the number for the volume of the Earth,
2.63791127511 cubic canon miles, and the number for the volume of the
Antechamber: 2,637.911275 cubic feet . Again, change of scale is
effected without changing number order; the micro reflects the macro.
The Antechamber is the Earth.

15. Another surprising association connects the volume of the Earth and the
volume of the Antechamber with the number 10. In Observation #7,
we saw how the reciprocal of the natural logarithm of 10 reflected the
latitude of the burial site. In this representation, the volume of the Earth
is again inflected by the reciprocal of the natural logarithm of the
number 10.
10-e = 2.302585093

2.302585093 = .4342944819

2.637784311 x 1010 = 263,778,431,100 cu. canon miles vol. of Earth.

III. Architectural space models the sublime.

In the preceding observations we have seen how the region of the Earth and
the measures by which it is accounted are buried with the king. The
volumes of the various chambers, though invisible, contain information--the
most special being that in the Burial Chamber which holds the king himself.
Let us look more closely at this chamber and its attending metro-logical
metaphors.

16. The space in the room called the Burial

Chamber was nearly filled by the four nested
golden shrines it contained.i The fourth and
innermost shrine held the Sarcophagus. The
volume of the empty Burial Chamber is
3,333.3333 cubic feet. (See measures and
diagrams in Appendix IV and Appendix V.)

We will suggest that the combined volumes of

all four nested shrines plus the volume of
space in the Sarcophagus was intended to
match the volume of space in the Burial

The two indicated volumes, the whole of the empty Burial Chamber at
3,333.333 cubic feet and the whole of the empty shrines and
sarcophagus at 3,333.333 cubic feet, signify both equivalence and
reiteration. The empty chamber, redoubled by the empty shrines and
sarcophagus is still empty space. To paraphrase Plato, the essence or
space of the chamber is both the same and the other.k

17. The volume of the Burial Chamber has an underlying relationship with
the volume of the Sarcophagus. The volume of the Burial Chamber is
3,333.3333 cubic feet. The volume of the Sarcophagus is 210.3191148
cubic feet. The ratio of the two volumes has a common logarithm of 1.2
—another validation of the foot of 12 inches. (Observation #5)

210.3191148 cu′ Sarcophagus
15.84893193-10 = 1.2

18. The cube root of the volume of the Four Shrines and Sarcophagus,
3333.333333 cubic feet + the combined volume of all the chambers,
9771.441472 cubic feet (Observation #15) leads to the number of the
minutes difference between the mean solar day of 1440 minutes and

20. The integration of canon units extends beyond height, width, length and
volume and includes commensurability with weight and material density.
In the canon system, the number 977.1441472 (#1) also represents the
number of canon ounces in one cubic foot of waterl.

21. The only paintings in Tutankhamun’s tomb are on the walls of the Burial
Chamber, a room traditionally associated with the ancient ritual name
“House of Gold.” m The opulence of the funerary objects in the room is
unrivaled and yet there is one more invisible “golden” indication written
into the volume of the chamber itself. The Burial Chamber encloses
5,760,000 cubic inches of space (3333.333333 cu′ x 1728 cu″ =
5,760,000 cu″) In the canon system, the number 5,760 stands in for the
number of grains in one ounce of gold avoirdupois. Again, the largest
(the volume of the Chamber) evolves from the smallest—the grain of
gold.
• One cubic foot of gold weighs 1200 pounds troy. At 12 ounces to the
troy pound, 1200 pounds would weigh 14,400 ounces troy.
• In the canon system, there are 31.0995445 grams in one canon
ounce.n In one pound troy (12 ounces) there would be 373.194534
canon grams.
• There are 15.432 grainso in one canon gram.
• The number of grains (15.432) in one gram x the number of grams in
one troy pound (373.194534) equals the number of grains in one troy
pound: There are 5,759.138049 grains in one troy pound of gold.

The modern designation for the troy ounce is 31.1 grams. In the canon system, the significator for
the gram of weight is linked to time: The reciprocal of the number of canon grams to the ounce,
31.0995445, is .03215481179. Multiplied by 103 = 32.15481179--the canon designation for
gravity--the number of feet an object falls in the second-second of fall.
o
15.432 is the modern and canon value for the number of grains in one gram. 15.432 grains to the
gram is the same in both troy and avoirdupois systems.

THE UNDISCOVERED TOMB OF TUTANKHAMUN ©BERNARD I. PIETSCH AND S. THOMPSON 2021

The volume of the Burial Chamber, 5,760,000 cubic inches

synchronistically stands for the weight of gold. The space of the “House of
Gold” is “filled with gold.” Symbolically, the chamber is gold.

IV. Number serves the transcendent.

“It is obvious that this collection of objects, placed within this room forms part of
one great recondite idea, and that each of them has a mystical potency of some kind.
It is for us to discover what were the respective meanings of these objects and their
intended divine mystical powers.”p
--Howard Carter

Following Carter’s intuition we have demonstrated that the meaning of the

tomb--the “container” surrounding the objects, is not concealed. The
intention of its dimensions is discoverable. The power of the architecture
descends not from magic, but from the potency of the architect’s ability to
commit to form his rendering of a transcendent model of “Heaven.” Here,
architecture designed for eternity, is preserved in empty space. It originates
prior to construction, in the mind of the architect. The architect of
Tutankhamun’s tomb designed a work of perfection, worthy of a pharaoh.
Inevitably, once the plans were surrendered to the craftsmen, the precision of
the design was diminished, as no thing can be flawless--the physical model
can only approximate the inspired conception.
The act of applying modern calculating methods to expose the transcendent
dimensions of the tomb does not diminish the fact that, by what ever means,
an ancient mind in a distant time conceived this work of art. We cannot say
how it was done. We can only marvel that it was done, and like Carter, be
amazed by the accomplishment.
Fortunately, thirty-five hundred years later, the essence of the architect’s
design, in its perfect state, can be recovered from the geometric and numeric
devices that live on in the tomb’s empty spaces. More lasting than all the
treasures, the power of the architecture is still in force, awaiting recognition.

Appendix I: Continuity of Tradition

Many of the astronomical and calendrical references, physical constants,
geodetic markers and mathematical operators found in Tut’s tomb are similar
to those found in the architecture of the Great Pyramid. Such
correspondences lead us to suggest that a robust metro-logical/architectural
tradition was in place as late as the XVIII Dynasty. The following are but a
few of the many architectural idioms shared by the Pyramid and
Tutankhamun’s tomb, the details of which we have elucidated elsewhere.
22. The iconic number, 7.60722382, identified in Observation #11 , is the
number of canon meters assigned to the length of the Descending
Passage in Tut’s tomb. In the architecture of the Great Pyramid, that
same number is hidden in the measure of the base of the Pyramid:
• 7.60722382 x 100 = 760.722382 as feet, is the length of one base
side of the Great Pyramid.
• The number of feet on one side of the Pyramid, 760.722382' x 4 is
the perimeter of the Great Pyramid: 3,042.88952 feet or 36,514.67434
inches, which (÷100) is significant as an indicator for the number of
calendar days in the year:

7.60722382 ⨉ 100 ⨉ 4 = 3,042.88952

3,042.88952 feet ⨉ 12 = 36514.67434 inches

36514.67434
100 = 365.1467434 days.

23. We have suggested that the Great Pyramid would have risen to 206
courses of stone. Originally, the stone portion of the Pyramid would have
been 5477.2 inches high to the completed 206th course. (The top of the
courses is not to be confused with the apex or point which geometrically
terminates in the space above the stones.) In the canon system, one
fathom is 72 inches in length. Reckoned in canon fathoms, the stony
Pyramid (to the top of the 206th course) would have been 76.0722222
fathoms high. This figure is a scant parts of an inch different from that
derived from the canon number, 760.722382 divided by 10, discussed
above.
5477.2" to top of 206th course = 76.072222 fathoms to top of 206th course
72" in one fathom

In the above application, multiples of the number 7.60722382 are assigned to

representations of linear distance, (760.722382' on the side of the Pyramid,)
(76.07222 fathoms to the height of the Pyramid) and to the measure of days

THE UNDISCOVERED TOMB OF TUTANKHAMUN ©BERNARD I. PIETSCH AND S. THOMPSON 2021

in the calendrical year (7.60722382 x 4 x 12 = 365.14 days.) A second

number, found in both the Pyramid and Tutankhamun’s tomb serves both
physics and architecture and is commemorated in the volume of the Annex.
Referring back to Observation #3, we found the reciprocal of the number of
cubic feet in the volume of the Annex (1 / 1023.390462 x 10 4) to be the same
number as the length of a one-second pendulum: 9.77144147 inches. Now,
revisiting the Annex and dividing the number of its cubic volume by 10 4, then
taking the square root of that number, we arrive at the number of seconds in
the period of a 1-inch pendulum: .319 seconds.

√ .1023390462 = .3199047455

24. In the Great Pyramid we find one of many instances of the number
9771441472 in the ratio between the amount of empty space above the
floor in the King’s Chamber (19,542,882.94 cubic inches) and the volume
of the Chamber (20,000,000 cubic inches) from ceiling to the bottom of
the Chamber walls, which begin 5.387884927" below the surface of the
floor. The ratio is .9771441472.

20,000,000.00 cu."

25. One of the most remarkable and overlooked wonders in the King’s
Chamber is the exposition of planetary elements written into the
dimensions of the 20 rectangular stones in the floor. q The figure used in
the King’s Chamber to represent the circumference of the planet Saturn r
is also found in Tutankhamun’s tomb in the number of the ratio between
the volume of the Stairs and the volume of the Descending Passage--
another relationship invoking the “magic” of 10:

244.323033 cu. ft. Stairs = .2366172

26. Observation #12 introduced the heartbeat to breath ratio as 3.441888.

Returning to the Pyramid, the number of inches in the base of the

Pyramid (36515") divided by the number of heart beats in one breath

(3.441888) yields the number 10,609—the orbit of Saturn in canon days.
However it comes to be, this is another example of the influence of
Saturnine numbers on an ancient source of the canon of measure.

27. The last example of shared referents with the Great Pyramid arises in
Tutankhamun’s Tomb from the confluence of three separate units of
measure: feet, inches, and degrees. The number of cubic feet in the
volume of the Descending Passage in Tut’s tomb, 1032.565550, divided
by the number of inches in the canon meter 39.4362" a linear measure,
is the same number as the degrees in the angle of the Ascending
Passage in the Great Pyramid.
1032.565555 cu. ft. vol. of Desc Pass. = 26.1831909 or
39.4362 inches canon meter 26°18′ 32″ angle of Ascend. Passage in
the Great Pyramid.

The correspondences between the embedded metro-logy found in Tut’s

Tomb and the measures in the Great Pyramid, are not just coincidence. A
data base as comprehensive as that insinuated into the architecture of these
two structures would have taken lifetimes of observation to chronicle and
codify. Over time, adherence to a canon of measure insured continuity of
tradition between successive generations. The style in which accumulated
knowledge was expressed may have changed , but to those in possession
of the canon, the meaning of the references conveyed by measure remained
intact.
