SUMMARY:

The My Brother's Peculiar Chicken story was about the weird chicken which Kiko and his brother found.
They couldn’t tell whether it is a hen or a rooster. They keep on arguing to each other because Kiko
insist that the chicken is a rooster for they saw it on the field fighting another chicken. But his brother is
not convinced for the chicken has no comb or wattles, both disagree to one another.

They began to ask their mother and father, even the people on their village like Tasio and Mr. Cruz. But
all of them couldn’t tell whether it’s a hen or a rooster. And they also thought that it was a “binabae”.

So instead, they decide to bring it into the cockpit and make it fight to a rooster. But during the fight
there is a turn of events, things gone different for what they have expected. A lovesick expression came
into the rooster’s eye, instead of fighting, the rooster began to do some love dance but the peculiar
chicken suddenly stub it’s spur into the rooster and the fight is over. The brothers couldn’t believe what
they had saw.

Kiko thinks he convinced his brother that the chicken is a rooster, but the chicken act something strange.
It began to quiver, and egg came out and drop into his brother’s hand.

REACTION:

The theme of the short story, is that people have differing opinions on a subject. One person sees
something one way and another person sees the exact opposite when looking at the same situation.

The story was humorous. It gave me a hint of being careful and being wise in a certain thing that I might
do because looks can be deceiving and confusing at the same time. That supports why we should not
always base our decision on what we always see, lets try looking at the bigger picture, discover new
angle and explore different perspective of a certain thing, just like analysing first the personalities of an
individual rather than its physical look. Furthermore, the story shows the filipino fascination of
cockfighting especialy when there is a problem to be argued.
We must not judge anything or someone only by its covering or physical appearance. Even though
someone is not totally looking good, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is bad. Like meeting people, we
don’t have to choose the beautiful or the handsome one. The most important is the personality of a
person.

CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, I admire the works of Alejandro R. Roces such as the story “My Brother’s Peculiar
Chicken” because the story is focused on a Filipino cultural heritage. It does not only teach life lessons
but it also introduces the reader to the culture of the Philippines no wonder his works have been
published in various international magazines and has received national and international awards. I
would strongly recommend this short story for people to make them realize that people have differing
opinions on a subject. One person sees something one way and another person sees the exact opposite
when looking at the same situation. We should not always base our decision on what we always see and
try looking at the bigger picture to discover new angle and explore different perspective of a certain
thing. We must not judge anything or someone only by its covering or physical appearance.
