BASIC CONCEPTS

DECISION-MAKING

To decide means to make-up ones mind. It

implies two or more alternatives under consideration
with the decider making a choice. This process of
making a choice in terms of decisions made in
planning, organizing, implementing or controlling
which is at the core of the managerial job is decision-
making.

PROGRAMMED DECISIONS

These are automatic, impulsive, and instinctive

decisions which are habitual and are relatively
unconscious reflex actions of management to certain
situations. Habits are forms of relatively
programmed decisions.

UNPROGRAMMED DECISIONS

These are decisions with considerable variations.

There is a continuum from one time decisions to
problems that may occur periodically but may call for
modified approaches because of changing internal
conditions or external environmental factors.
