PART-B
Answer any 5 out of 8 Questions 5 X 10M = 50 Marks

1. A circular ring of radius a carries a uniform charge ρL C/m and is placed on the xy-plane
with axis the same as the z-axis.
a) Show that

(b) What values of h gives the maximum value of E?

(c) If the total charge on the ring is Q, find E as a ≥ 0.

2. a) State Maxwell’s equations for static EM fields in point & integral forms. Give their
word statements. [6M]
b) Find H at the centre of a square current loop of side ‘l’ by using Biot-Savart’s law?

[4M]

3. a) Derive the expressions for α and β in a good conductor.

b) Derive wave equations in E and H for free-space conditions.

4. a) Derive the equation for the voltage and current at any point on a simple transmission
line.
b) An open wire telephone line has R = 10Ω/km, L = 0.0037 henry/km, C = 0.0083x10 -6
farad/km and G = 0.4 x 10-6/km. Determine its Z0, α and β at 1 KHz.
5. a) A radio frequency line with Z0 = 70 ohm is terminated by ZL = 115-j80 ohm at
attenuation constant = 2.5m. Find the VSWR and the maximum & minimum line
impedances. Derive the formula used.

terms of intrinsic impedances of medium.
(b) Derive condition for distortionless transmission line.

8. Write short notes on any two of the following

(a) It is required to hold four equal point charges to each in equilibrium at the corners of a
square. Find the point charge, which will do this if placed at the center of the square.
(b) State and explain Biot-Savart’s law relating the magnetic field produced at a point due
to the current in a small elemental wire.
(c) If a wave of 6GHz is propagating between two parallel conducting plates separated by
30mm. Find the cutoff frequency, guide wavelength and also the impedance of the
dominant mode.
