1. What is etymology? (2 marks, maximum 40 words)


Etymology is the study of origin of words and how original words develop over the
course of time.
2. “A sleeper sleeps.” Identify the affixes in the quoted sentence and mention whether
they are derivational morphemes or inflectional morphemes. (2 marks, maximum 40
words)
In sleeper, “er” is the affix and is a derivational morpheme. In sleeps, “s” is the affix
and is an inflectional morpheme.

3. Mention two words where two different bound morphemes act as bases in English. (2
marks, maximum 40 words)
Receive, Conceive, Deceive- cieve is the morpheme
Permit, Admit, Submit- mit is the morphem

4. What is the difference between content words and function words? (4 marks,
maximum 80 words)
Content words are defined as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that denote
concepts such as objects, actions, attributes, and ideas. They are also called open class
words because we can or regularly add comments to these classes. These are the
words that even readily open themselves up for modification.

Function words do not have precise lexical meanings or significant concepts


associated with them, including conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, and articles.
They specify grammatical relations and have little semantic content.
