How do we acquire language ?
 Research in SLA
● SLA researchers look at acquisition in naturalistic contexts
(where learners pick up the language informally through
interacting in the language) and in classroom settings.
Researchers are interested in both product (the language used
by learners at different stages in the acquisition process) and
process (the mental process and environmental factors that
influence the acquisition process). ("Second language
acquisition" 87)
Difference between learning and acquisition
● Learning is a conscious
process
● Rules or structures to be
followed
● Formed institutes like
schools and colleges
● Majorly focused on
grammar
● Example: English
● Acquisition happens
naturally
● No rules or set are required
in acquisition
● It happens in routine days
● Example: Native or
regional languages like
Gujarati, Hindi etc.
 Practice of Language Acquisition
● Developing the LSRW skills to acquire second language.
● Listening goes hand in hand with Speaking.
● Reading goes with Writing.
● Collecting inputs then going to structures.
