Simile: as all I was quiet;

Methafor: dressings by rushlight;

Epithet: obscure position;

Simile: as boys are elsewhere;

Simile: as she emerged from the book- closet
Enumaration: I could mark, stitch, knit.
Methafor: not a tear rose to Burn's eye;
You dirty! Disagreeable girl! You have never cleaned your nails
morning!;
Hardened girl!- exclaimed Miss Scratcherd; nothing can correct
you of your slatternly habits, carry the rod way.
Epithet: pensive face, slatternly habits, hardened girl, ominous tool,
respectful curtesy, dozen strokes, tear rose, impotent anger, small inner room,
sharply inflicted, ordinary expressions.
