INNOVATION - NEUROLOGICAL CHIP

1. General Aim

Design an innovative product identifying technological advances and the most

important needs of society such as health to put into practice the skills acquired
at this level.

2. Theoretical Framework

Currently, there are ambitious projects that use technological resources to

satisfy the new demands of society, among one of them is Elon Musk's
proposal, which has focused on technological development in the automotive
and astronautics field, but also in the health field, specifically in the neurological
area, as he raised an idea that aims to connect the human brain with a
computer. As a result, it could allow people with conditions like Parkinson's
disease to control their physical movements or manipulate machines through
thought (Rory, 2020)

Professor Andrew Jackson from the UK's Science Media Center said He has
explored how to help spinal injury patients by transmitting signals from the brain
to the spinal cord to restore some arm movements.

Neurology has advanced considerably in recent decades. The incorporation of

computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have
allowed neurosurgical treatments with a lower risk of death for patients. Also
within the field of neurology teaching, virtual practice methods have been
developed that simulate procedures in both physical and physiological variables
very close to reality. Regarding the new tools used, the most important
development has been neuronavigation. With this system, the information from
a patient is incorporated into a computer. (Mary, 2010).

Although all these techniques have made it possible to improve results in

neurosurgery, they are not without disadvantages. Some of them are
expensive; others require rigorous training to apply, In the future it is likely that
robotics will be incorporated into neurology.

3. Project development
3.1 Introduction

To begin with our proposal, we will mention some processes that have been
facilitated in neurology by technological advances such as tomography and
magnetic resonance. Due to this, the diagnoses were facilitated by the
implementation of computerized equipment but now the challenge is more
complex, because expert doctors say that if they connect the brain to a
computer there would be a huge risk. On the other hand, if we can make that
connection, we will take a big step in technological innovation.

3.2 Importance

There are several studies that support the use of technology in the brain,
however, we need to verify that the results of the implementation of the chip do
not have negative consequences; also, we need to have trained professionals
to operate the information emitted by the chip. In this case, the importance of
our project is to explain how we should manage this technology, so that it can
be used beneficially.

3.3 Description

It is an innovative, millimeter, round, gray and synthetic chip; it will be

developed by high precision computerized machines with conductive and semi-
conductive materials.

The chip consists of some parts, among which we can find its plastic cover, its
main circuit, its secondary circuit, a main processor, and a wireless transmitter
that will be responsible for sending the collected information. Some questions
that we can answer for now are:

The chip is not visible, is it?

Correct, the chip will not be visible due to its small size.

The chip installation is safe, isn’t it?

Yes, because the installation will be done by a robot.

3.4 How to use

The chip is placed in the brain by a robot-assisted operation. In its secondary

circuit it has a lot of electrodes that will connect with some parts of the brain.

The chip is wireless, so we need to have an external device that allows us to

view the information collected by the chip.

The specialized doctor will have access to the information from his device,
unlike traditional medicine; the doctor didn’t need to perform medical
procedures such as magnetic resonance or tomography.

In addition, the patient will also have access to the information, so it is possible
to have an online consultation and shouldn’t have to go to the medical center.

3.5 Operation principle

To know how it works, it is necessary to detail each of its components:

Main circuit. - It houses the main processor and the battery, its function is to
connect the secondary circuit, interpret the received data, and send it to the
wireless transmitter.

Secondary circuit. - Round, semi-metallic sensor. It contains a lot of tiny

electrodes that connect to different parts of the brain. Receive data on brain
behavior in real time.

Main processor. - Millimeter, square, synthetic processor. The brain works

through electrical signals sent by neurons, the function of the processor is to
transform these signals so that they can be quantized and subsequently sent.

Wireless transmitter. - Small, round, plastic and metal, transmitting device.

Works using bluetooth technology, it has the ability to send the collected data to
an external device that connects to it.

We consider interpreting the relationship between each component to

understand how it works.

3.6 Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

 Something positive is that by installing a chip in the brain of a soldier they

can analyze their location as well as their state of health on the
battlefields.
 The use of chips can also be good when tracking the employees of a
company and verifying the entries to restricted areas.
 In the event of a traffic accident, the doctors would have access to the
patient's data, so they could supply medication as soon as possible.
 Chips could be very useful when finding a missing pet.
 Likewise, the police could identify if a driver has consumed alcohol or
drugs.

Disadvantages

 A very big disadvantage is that they invade our life and our thoughts
because by having access to our thoughts, there may be some
companies that want to interfere with our privacy.

4. Conclusions

 Currently integrated circuits contain around tens and hundreds of millions

of transistors with this will facilitate trying to make a production
 The frequency of nerve impulses can vary, while most of digital systems
are synchronous, that is, the transmission frequency is unalterable and is
given by a clock.
 The brain has a high memory capacity and this is stored in different parts
of it. Information on any electronic device is stored in a certain memory
location that is accessible by your direction.
 The brain is a much more fault-tolerant system than any device
electronic created today.
