Q.1 (a) The depth of water upstream of a spillway is 5.0m and the spillway has a (9)
discharge of 1.2 m3/sec per meter of width occurring over the spillway.
What depth y2 will exist downstream of the hydraulic jump? Assume
negligible energy loss over the spillway.
(b) Design an irrigation channel using Kennedy’s theory, to carry a discharge of (8)
40 cumecs. Take n = 0.0225 and m = 1.05. The longitudinal slope of the
channel is 1 in 5000. Assume other reasonable data, if missing.
(c) Design the section of a channel for the maximum discharge with the (8)
following data:
Bed slope = 1 in 5000
Available silt size = 0.2 mm
Side slope = 1.5:1
Q.2 (a) Water is discharging under the sluice gate as shown below causes a hydraulic (10)
jump. Compute the flow depths (y2 and y3) and corresponding velocities, the
head loss and energy dissipation ratio of the hydraulic jump.
(b) A dam raises the water level to 3m at the end of a wide rectangular channel. (9)
The normal depth and critical depth for a particular flow scenario are 2m and
2.5m respectively, The longitudinal slope for the channel is 0.0001. Compute
the length of the resulting flow profile between the dam site and the location
where the depth is 2.7m using Bresse method.
(c) The bed width of a rectangular channel is 24 m and the depth of flow is 6m. (6)
The discharge in the canal is 86 cumecs. The bed slope of the channel is 1 in
4000. Assume Chezy’s constant C = 60. Determine the slope of the free
water surface.
Q.3 (a) The values of variables in connection with a hydraulic jump in horizontal (8)
rectangular channel are given in the table below. Compute the values of the
other variables in the table.
