ST. MARK’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

All Saints Day
November 1, 2020
10:30am The Holy Eucharist, Rite II BCP 355

THE WORD OF GOD

ENTRANCE HYMN For all the saints, who from their labors rest - (Sine
Nomine)
1 For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy Name, O Jesus, be for ever blessed.
Alleluia, alleluia!
2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might:
thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight;
thou, in the darkness drear, the one true Light.
Alleluia, alleluia!
7 But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;
the saints triumphant rise in bright array;
the King of glory passes on his way.
Alleluia, alleluia!
OPENING ACCLAMATION
Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
COLLECT FOR PURITY
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known,
and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our
hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may
perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE SONG OF PRAISE Trisagion, Rutter, (S-102)

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One have mercy upon us.
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and
fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace
so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may
come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love
you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives
and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE LESSONS
THE FIRST LESSON: REVELATION 7:9-17
Lector: A Reading from the Revelation to John
9
After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count,
from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing
before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches
in their hands. 10They cried out in a loud voice, saying,
 “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the
Lamb!”
11
And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the
four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and
worshiped God, 12singing,
 “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
 and thanksgiving and honor
 and power and might
 be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
  13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in
white, and where have they come from?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you are the
Page 3 of 19

one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of
the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the
blood of the Lamb.
 15For this reason they are before the throne of God,
  and worship him day and night within his temple,
  and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.
 16They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
  the sun will not strike them,
  nor any scorching heat;
 17for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd,
  and he will guide them to springs of the water of life,
 and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Lector: The Word of the Lord
People: Thanks be to God

Psalm 34:1-10, 22
Lector: Please join me in reading portions of Psalm 34 responsively by
whole verse.
 1I will bless the LORD at all times; *
  his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
 2I will glory in the LORD; *
  let the humble hear and rejoice.
 3Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; *
  let us exalt his Name together.
 4I sought the LORD, and he answered me *
  and delivered me out of all my terror.
 5Look upon him and be radiant, *
  and let not your faces be ashamed.
 6I called in my affliction, and the LORD heard me *
  and saved me from all my troubles.
 7The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, *
Page 4 of 19

  and he will deliver them.

 8Taste and see that the LORD is good; *
  happy are they who trust in him!
 9Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, *
  for those who fear him lack nothing.
 10The young lions lack and suffer hunger, *
  but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good.
 22The LORD ransoms the life of his servants, *
  and none will be punished who trust in him.
In unison: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it
was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.
Lesson: 1 John 3:1-3
Lector: A Reading from the 1st Letter of John
1
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of
God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that
it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be
has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we
will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3And all who have this hope in
him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
Lector: The Word of the Lord
People: Thanks be to God
SEQUENCE HYMN “Thy Kingdom come!” on bended knee -  (St.
Flavian)
1 "Thy kingdom come!" on bended knee
the passing ages pray;
and faithful souls have yearned to see
on earth that kingdom's day.
2 But the slow watches of the night
not less to God belong;
and for the everlasting right
Page 5 of 19

the silent stars are strong.

3 And lo, already on the hills
the flags of dawn appear;
gird up your loins, ye prophet souls,
proclaim the day is near.
GOSPEL: Matthew 5:1-12
Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
1
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat
down, his disciples came to him. 2Then he began to speak, and taught them,
saying:
 3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
 4“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
 5“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
 6“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for
they will be filled.
7
  “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
 8“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
  10“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11
   “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all
kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for
your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the
prophets who were before you.”
Priest The Gospel of the Lord.
People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Page 10 of 19

OFFERTORY HYMN Who are these like stars appearing - (Zeuch mich,
zeuch mich)
[The Congregation is invited to sing on the final verse]

1 Who are these like stars appearing,

these, before God’s throne who stand?
Each a golden crown is wearing;
who are all this glorious band?
Alleluia! hark, they sing,
praising loud their heavenly King.

3 These are they who have contended
for their Savior’s honor long,
wrestling on till life was ended,
following not the sinful throng;
these, who well the fight sustained,
triumph by the Lamb have gained.

5 These, like priests, have watched and waited,
offering up to Christ their will,
soul and body consecrated,
day and night they serve him still.
Now in God’s most holy place,
blest they stand before his face.

THE PROPER PREFACE

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give
thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
For in the multitude of your saints you have surrounded us with a great
cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with
endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the
crown of glory that never fades away.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and
with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the
glory of your Name:

SANCTUS  (Land of Rest)

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
    Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
    Hosanna in the highest.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have
made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in
your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made
flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate
from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him,
you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In
him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into
righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and
when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for
the remembrance of me.”
Page 12 of 19

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he
gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the
new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of
sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore,
according to his command, O Father,
We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;
THE EPICLESIS (Invocation of the Holy Spirit)
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all;
presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that
they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new
Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable
through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put
all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly
country where, with [the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Mark and] all your saints,
we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church,
and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor
and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
Page 13 of 19

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power,
and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

FRACTION ANTHEM - Christ our Passover (Ambrosian Chant)
Fr. Bob intones
Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
AGNUS DEI (Setting: Deutche Messe, Schubert)
Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us;
Jesus, Bearer of our sins have mercy on us;
Jesus Redeemer of the world give us your peace.
INVITATION
The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that
Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with
thanksgiving.
All Baptized Christians who recognize the presence of the Lord in the bread and wine
are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us. The wafers have been intincted with a
drop or two of a wine and water mixture and allowed to dry. These wafers are
consecrated so that we all receive both the Body and Blood of Christ. Our COVID 19
protocol directs the Priest and Lay Eucharistic Minister to bring the consecrated
elements to you.  If you prefer not to receive the bread cross your arms over your chest
and the priest will pray a prayer of blessing for you instead.

THE COMMUNION HYMN For thy dear saints, O Lord - (St. George)
1 For thy dear saints, O Lord,
who strove in thee to live,
who followed thee, obeyed, adored,
our grateful hymn receive.

Page 14 of 19

2 They all in life and death,

with thee their Lord in view,
learned from thy Holy Spirit’s breath
to suffer and to do.
4 Jesus, thy Name we bless,
and humbly pray that we
may follow them in holiness,
who lived and died for thee.

THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Let us pray.
Eternal God, heavenly Father,
you have graciously accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

BLESSING
The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our
Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through
the blood of the eternal covenant: Make you perfect in
every good work to do his will, working in you that which is
well-pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen.
