NURSING PHILOSOPHY REFLECTION 2

Nursing Philosophy Reflection

Reflecting upon one of my first papers in my journey towards my Bachelor's Degree in

Nursing I realize how much I do associate my daily nursing interactions with patients to Betty

Neuman's Systems Model. Betty Neuman's philosophy is based upon holistic care of a patient

that is influenced by patient's environment, spiritual beliefs, and patient's reactions to actual or

potential environmental stressors. Nursing in the Emergency Room always involves holistic care

including identifying patient's physiochemical, psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, and

developmental status, which is all included in Betty Neuman's Nursing Philosophy. I have and

continue to realize most often treating patients holistically helps nursing identify why the

patient's condition is unstable, how the patient has declined to eventually come to the ER, and

help identify the lack of resources a patient may have. Practicing nursing with Betty Neuman's

manner helps patient's outcomes and risk of readmission lessen which also improves patient's

satisfaction and cost to the hospital and patients. For example treating a patient's family

dynamics helped decrease the patient's visits to the ER. Family discord and limited knowledge of

resources limited the patient's best outcome. Educating the family and placing the correct

resources helped the family regain structure, independence, and the patient with increased

support and home care. As part of her medical team, we did not treat only her physical illness but

treated her environmental stressors, which follows Betty Neuman's Systems Model for Nursing

Philosophy.

Within my nursing philosophy, I also reflect on the beliefs and values such as

compassion, loyalty, respect optimism, education, and cleanliness. Betty Neuman's System

Model is parallel with these beliefs and values and I continue to practice within the philosophy.

By developing a trusting relationship with my patients and families, I am able to display loyalty.
NURSING PHILOSOPHY REFLECTION 3

Respecting the patient's wishes and being optimistic even in end of life situations support my

nursing philosophy. Presenting myself in a clean professional image and keeping the patient's

room free of as much clutter as possible demonstrates healing and comfort. Seeking new

education, attending specialty training, and knowing my resources helps calm and build more

trust with my patients. All the above listed factors helps eliminate or decrease environmental

stressors which Betty Neuman's System Model states effects a patients illness and healing.

Being able to reflect on what I identified in the beginning of my BSN journey as my

nursing philosophy and identifying that I am still in agreeance with my choice demonstrates to

myself that I am on the correct path for my future career. I pride myself in being a nurse, caring

for others, and serving the public which I plan to continue with lifelong learning by continuing to

achieve my Master's in Nursing and possibly my Doctorate to pursue a future career in education

in classroom and clinically.
