Question 1 [7.5 marks]


(a) A circular disc of radius 3𝑚, with the total charge of 50 𝑚𝐶, is placed in 𝑥 − 𝑦 plane.
The charge is uniformly distributed and the center of the disc is at origin.
(i) Determine the potential due to the charge at 𝑃(0,0,3). [3.5 marks]
(ii) If all charge is at the center of the disc, determine the potential at 𝑃(0,0,3).
[1 mark]

(b) An electric voltage field is produced by the point charges 1 𝑚𝐶 and 3 𝑚𝐶 located at
𝑃(−2, 0, 2) and 𝑄(1, 2, 0), respectively. Determine the energy stored in the field.
[3 marks]

Question 2 [7.5 marks]


(a) The electric field intensity in polystrene (𝜀𝑟 = 2.4) filling the space between the plates
of a parallel-plate capacitor is 8 𝑘𝑉/𝑚. The distance between the plates is 3 𝑚𝑚.
Calculate:
(i) the polarization |𝑃⃗|, [2 marks]
(ii) the surface charge density of free charge on the plates, [1 mark]
(iii) the surface density of polarization charge. [1 mark]

(b) Let the current density 𝐽 = 𝜌̂ − 𝜌2 +0.02 𝑧̂ 𝐴⁄𝑚2.

(i) Find the total current crossing the plane 𝑧 = 0.2 in the 𝑧̂ direction for 0 < 𝜌 < 1.

Question 3 [10 marks]
(a) Region 1 (𝑦 < 0) contains a dielectric for which dielectric constant 𝜀𝑟 = 3, while region
2 (𝑦 > 0) is characterized by the dielectric constant 𝜀𝑟 = 4.8. Let the electric field
intensity in region 1 is given by ⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐸1 = −6𝑥̂ + 10𝑦̂ + 14𝑧̂ V/m, find
(i) the electric field intensity in region 2 ( ⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐸2 ), [4.5 marks]
(ii) the polarization vector in region 2 ( ⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑃2 ), [1.5 marks]
(iii) the angle between the electric field in region 1 ( ⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐸1 ) and the normal to the surface.

(b) Region 𝑧 ≤ 0 consists of a perfect conductor while region 𝑧 ≥ 0 is a dielectric medium


(𝜀𝑟 = 4.4). If there is a surface charge of 3 𝑛𝐶⁄𝑚2 on the conductor, determine
magnitude of the electric field intensity at:
(i) 𝑃 (5, −2, 4), [1 mark]
(ii) 𝑄 (−1, 2, −3). [1 mark]

Question 4 [5 marks]
The region between concentric conducting shells 𝑟 = 1.5 𝑚 and 𝑟 = 2.5 𝑚 is charge free. If
the voltages at 𝑟 = 1.5 𝑚 and 𝑟 = 2.5 𝑚 are −10 𝑉 and 100 𝑉, respectively, determine:
(i) the potential at 𝑟 = 1.8 𝑚, [3.5 marks]
(ii) the electric filed intensity at r=2.2 𝑚. [1.5 marks]
