I. INTRODUCTION
Land surveying is usually a task that has been delegated to the geodetic engineer.
During construction the location of lot markers must be accurately established to prevent overlap
with adjoining lot properties. This lot markers are established by geodetic engineers using high
end surveying instruments like theodolite. There are also other activities that require surveying
like staking of setbacks, laying out perpendicular references, extending an alignment and
checking of bearing that are necessary activities in construction. Large projects or companies can
afford to employ the services of a geodetic engineer for the different activities. However the
services of geodetic engineers may not always be available or too costly for small projects to do
multiple survey during the duration of the project. For this reason alternative methods of
surveying like using 3-4-5 triangles, compass, tape techniques and string aligning are utilized to
roughly layout the construction.
With the advance of technology the smartphones applications has become more
reliable as measuring device and can roughly measure lot bearings. The compass app for
smartphone can be used to measure bearing of lots by aligning the phone with the direction of
the lot boundary. The researchers will therefore use smartphone compass app to verify the
accuracy of the app by measuring the bearings of an existing lot and comparing the accuracy of
the measurements to the actual lot bearings. In doing so the researcher can determine if the
compass app can be a reliable method of measuring direction.
An error of 1 degree will generate a 1.75 cm deviation per meter length of lot the line
and since the compass apps cannot measure minutes and seconds the researchers must conduct
multiple measurements for each line and then taking the average of such measurements.

II. METHODOLOGY:
To determine the accuracy of the smartphone compass application the researchers will
measure the lot specify how many measurements you made for each lot boundary . A string
is laid out from lot marker to lot marker and the phone is aligned to the string from which a
reading on the compass will be taken. By doing several measurements then the possible
errors in measuring is minimized. The measured value is then compared to the lot bearing as
specified in the lot plan. To evaluate the data a T-test that is at 5% significance will be used
to see if there is a significant difference in the measured lot bearing and indicated lot bearing
in the lot plan.
There are two important information that will be obtained in this research the first one is the
maximum error that was obtained. This value is the largest error from the gathered data and it
will indicate how far a measurement can deviate from the original. The second important
information is the most probable error if a measurement is taken. This value comes from the
average error of all measurements.
In evaluating using the T-test the azimuth direction shall be used. This is done so that the
error is distributed along the traverse of the lot as the lot line circumnavigate the lot This
would not be possible if bearing is used as it cannot distinguish the N,E,W,S directions.
The researchers will be using ________________________ app>>>>Discuss the app and its
features
1. Based on the maximum deviation in bearing that obtained. The use of smartphone
compass app gives an accuracy range of ±_____ degrees which is equal to a maximum
deviation of __________ for every meter of lot line.
2. The compass app cannot measure minutes therefore this is only practical for small plots
of land. However multiple measurements can be done for longer measurements so that
the error is minimized.
V. RECOMMENDATIONS
Itemize your recomendation
1. The accuracy of _________ can still increase in the future as cellphone apps
become more advanced.
2. The researchers has used typical residential lots. A research for larger lots can be
made to see if we can still rely on smartphone app measurements.
3. Other recommendations pag may data na kayo
