“Mechanisms of Political Radicalization: Pathways

Toward Terrorism”. Terrorism and Political Violence 20 (2008): 415-433.
Radicalization is usually associated with trust syndrome about the current situation and its history.
They are special or elected groups who have been treated unfairly and betrayed, besides that no other
person cares or helps them while in a terrible situation. The group has different and stronger feelings
about conflict, so they tend to feel more sadness and humiliation in failure than happiness and group
success. This article explains about radicalization which is the beginning of the emergence of the
notion of terrorism. In addition, there are twelve mechanisms which are the levels of radicalization
processes, where the stronger the radicalization, the more mechanisms involved and the more
synergized in relations and strengthening. The mechanisms considered here are related to political
radicalization and terrorism to understand thought reform, cult recruitment, military training, and
preparation of a country for interstate war. The focus of this article is to carry out the
conceptualization of radicalization in the political sphere as a dimension that increases the extremes of
feelings and beliefs in supporting intergroup conflicts. The conceptualization of political
radicalization is a change in beliefs, feelings, and actions leading to sacrifice and support for
intergroup conflicts. This article describes the radicalization process that occurs in individuals,
groups, and problems. Radicalization and terrorism bring individuals into small groups connected
with large organizations. Radicalization is the origin of the notion of terrorism. When radicalization
has developed in a region or country, the government must immediately take concrete steps to
overcome it, because if left continuously the radicalized individuals and groups will feel more free to
master politics and government in exercising their organizational control. This article is useful for
knowing radicalization in depth because radicalization gets the most attention in the latest theory of
terrorism. An individual is recruited into a terrorist group through personal connections with existing
terrorists. In addition, no terrorist wants to try to recruit someone who might betray the terrorists to
the authorities. A country must crush radicalism and terrorism from its country so that people can live
in peace and quiet.
