Conflict Management Strategies & Techniques

Strategy Description

Avoidance Also known as withdrawing style. In this strategy the


conflicts which are of minor nature are intentionally ignored
and avoided. It’s a lose-lose approach.

Compromising It is traditional method of conflict resolution. In this strategy,


each party involved in the conflict gives up something. This
approach can be applied when the goals and the power of
both sides are of equal level.

Accommodating It focuses on emphasizing the areas of agreement and


/Smoothing common goals and de-emphasizing disagreements.

Collaboration It is often described as the “win-win” scenario. Both sides


creatively work together to achieve the goals and desired
outcomes benefitting all involved parties.

Forcing This style is also known as the “win-lose” approach. A person


seeks to reach his/her own preferred outcomes at the
expense of a partner.

Alternative Dispute When the conflict cannot be solved internally, a neutral body
Resolution / Third Party from outside of the organization e.g. negotiators, facilitators,
intervention Technique conciliator, mediators, arbitrators are brought in to resolve
the conflict. Commonly used in labor-management
negotiations.
