Assignment

Total marks: 30 (5x6)

1. Draw a neat cross section of runway for an international airport having instrumental landing
facilities. Show therein the various runway geometrics. Briefly discuss about heliport.
2. Determine the radius of a taxiway for a supersonic transport whose wheel base is 35 m and the
tread of main landing gear is 7.2 m. The design turning speed is 50 kmph. Assume any other data
if required.
3. What is holding aprons? Design the pavement section using Burmister’s approach of two layered
system. The plate bearing tests were conducted with 75cm diameter plate on soil subgrade and 15
cm thick base course. The pressure recorded at 0.5 cm deflection for both the layers were 1.0
g/cm2 respectively. It is required to design the pavement section for 25000 kg wheel load with tire
pressure of 10.5 g/cm2.
4. Plate bearing test conducted on a soil subgrade using 75cm diameter plate, yielding 0.5 cm
deflection, a pressure of 2.2 kg/cm2 after ten repetitions. Design a runway for capacity operation
and a single wheel load of 25,000kg with a tyre pressure of 10.5 kg/cm2 .
5. What are the characteristics of an ideal airport layout? Sketch typical layout of an airport showing
the location of runway, taxiway, apron and terminal building etc. for the following runway
configuration: (i) single runway and (ii) Two offset parallel runway.
