LESSON TITLE: The Ohio Erie Canal SUBJECT AREA: American History

GRADE LEVEL: 8 TIME ALLOCATION: 3 Hours

Students will be able to explain how canals impacted the industrial revolution.

OHIO STANDARDS: 8th grade - 25. The Industrial Revolution fundamentally changed the means of production as a result
of improvements in technology, use of new power resources, the advent of interchangeable parts and the shift from craftwork
to factory work.

Students will have begun learning about the industrial Revolution in the United States. This lesson will focus on
the canal system and specifically the Ohio and Erie canal way.

CONNECTION BETWEEN PRIOR AND FUTURE KNOWLEDGE (Discuss students’ readiness for learning, preferred
learning styles, or backgrounds and prior experiences. Describe the procedure(s) used to gain this info ):

Students will have previously learned about the canal way in Ohio History previously. They will also have learned
about the canal way system in the United States before this lesson.

INDUCTION (introduction to lesson) TIME ALLOCATIONS: 10 minutes

Students will be grouped together in order to prepare for their trip to the ACTIVITY PURPOSE: Review of Prior
Ohio and Erie canal way at the Zoar canal connection. They will be knowledge

CLOSURE TIME ALLOCATIONS: 10 minutes

Students will be asked to complete a report about their experience at ACTIVITY PURPOSE: apply knew
the Canalway for homework. For this report they will be creating a new knowledge
page on their website that they have been building about the class. Review of prior knowledge/skill?
They will write a two-paragraph summary about what they learned on New knowledge/skill?
their trip in a blog post on their blog page and within that blog post they
will place a link to the new page about the canal way. On the new page STUDENT GROUPING: individual
they will write a paragraph about what they encountered when they (whole, small group, coop, indiv, other)
explored the Canalway trail and they will include their pictures that they
took. They must include at least five pictures from the canal way. They IF GROUPED, EXPLAIN BASIS:
will also write a five-paragraph story about what their experiences on (random, differentiated, other, ..)
