I attended a symposium held by Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The symposium was for pediatric
critical care nurses. I was an attendee whose role was to listen to the various speakers and ask
any questions I had. We logged into a Zoom call at 8:30 AM and could see only the PCH video;
there were two hosts who directed questions to speakers and handled transitions. Each speaker
had a topic for about twenty minutes, and there were fourteen speakers throughout the day with a
short lunch break. For each speaker, the screen was shared to be able to view their PowerPoint. If
there was time, a period of questions in the chat followed each presentation for the speaker.
Topics throughout the day included extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), premature
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
This program was held over Zoom for 7.5 hours (8:30 AM – 4:00 PM). The speakers were all at
This experience was incredibly helpful. I would love to work in an area like the pediatric
intensive care unit (PICU), and all the topics were extremely relevant. All of the speakers were
either nurses, doctors, or pharmacists, and the insight they brought was highly valuable. With
specialty areas, there often isn’t enough time in nursing school for detailed lectures on every
single topic. With these symposium speakers, I was able to learn more about details such as
ECMO for neonates, delirium in children, infant skin care, and more.
How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
Throughout my nursing career I will be able to apply the information I learned. As a hopeful
future pediatric nurse, I will be able to use the assessment skills provided by the nurses
presenting to know how to adjust my own assessments, having had primarily practice on adult
patients.
Yes, I would highly recommend this experience in the future. I enjoyed hearing from speakers on
a variety of topics, and I think anyone interested in acute or critical pediatric care would highly
benefit from attending a similar symposium. I was also thankful that the symposium was
available online, as I was in Tucson during the time of this Phoenix conference. With the
beneficial content and flexible nature of the event, I would recommend this to others
