1. WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK HAS MEDIA PLAYED IN SHAPING CULTURE AND
SOCIETY?

Mass media played a crucial role when it came to shaping culture and society. In what way?

Culture is the knowledge, beliefs, and practices of group of people. And culture is like a tradition that was
handed from generation to generation until such it exist in a way that we see right now. By using a
traditional method in passing the knowledge, customs, beliefs, there is a risk that some will be lost or
forgotten sometime and this will led it to disappear in our lives.

That would be a great loss and recovering it would be hard. But with media present in today’s society, it
can help us preserve and transmit our culture to a lot of Filipinos. We can agree that we have some good
and not good traditions that in today’s society are frowned upon. Media, help us not only distribute
knowledge in a large audience, but it also subtly controls content of culture in way that will only help and
bring benefits to us as a collective group. The “not so good” traditions are more likely left to bring us
facts and they will present it in a way that would discourage us from doing it.

Society on the other hand, is the face or the outer appearance of a country. It is govern by rights and laws
that protect people’s life and interest. Media has many functions like watchdog, sets the public agenda,
and supports free exchange of ideas and opinions to help protect the integrity and cohesiveness of the
country and its people.

Mass media played a crucial role so that culture can be transmitted and preserved in today’s
society and help society by giving knowledge to people that would protect both individual’s interest and
society’s interest as a whole.

2. WITH THE MANY FUNCTIONS OF MASS MEDIA, WHICH ONE IS MORE PRACTICED
IN THE COUNTRY? YOU MAY HAVE MORE THAN ONE ANSWER.

Mass Media in the Philippines practiced a lot of functions that benefit the country as a whole. But it can
be said that by observing it closely, it mainly practices as Surveillance or Watcher Function and
Government Watchdog or Set the Agenda Function.

Why do we watch news or listen to radio sometimes? It is mostly because we want to know or want to be
informed mainly what is happening in our country. Is there any typhoon warnings? Is there a COVID
vaccine yet? What happened to the landslide in that place? A hit and run? Who died and who is the
murderer? These are what mass media often talk about because this is what people is more likely to be
interested. It is so true that in journalism, the have a saying that “Bad news is good news.” That is why
surveillance function is more practiced in the Philippines.

Corruption from government in the Philippines is old news that most Filipinos know it as a fact that
politicians take money that is intended for them into their own pocket.

3. HOW DOES TRANSMEDIA CONTRIBUTE TO GLOBALIZATION?

Transmedia is the technique of telling a single story and this is more effective in globalization since its
quality should be simple but impactful. It is more effective to tell stories in a global way that it can be
understood and convey its intended message to different culture. It also help spread knowledge and
awareness about a country to other countries.

It helps reputation, transaction, and connection smoothly. Example of such globalization are K-pop fans
in our country buying Korean products, other countries buying Filipino product like Jollibee that can be
available now in their country thanks to transmedia.
