Title: The 50 states project

Summary: Within this project students will research a state and fill in the information that corresponds with their
state. They will then come up with a creative way to present the information that they had found.
*This will lead up to state flag scavenger hunt out at Wylie Park*
Learners: I will be applying this lesson in a 4th grade classroom

Timeline of activities (Instructional Procedures):
Before introducing activity to class:
 Before the project is introduced you (the teacher) will need to create the template that will be used. Once
that is finished, Upload it to the Google classroom
 In Google classroom create instructions for assignment along with due dates that will be occurring (Final
due date, Dropbox Check in, etc)
 Create a google sheet that has all of the 50 states on it along with presentation sign up sheet (upload both
to google classroom)
Activity (week long)
Day 1:
 In class, pull up the google classroom along with the slide show of instructions.
 After going through the instructions (see Assessment) pull up google sheets that has all the 50 states listed.
Use popsicle sticks to call on students, once one state is picked put students name beside the state they
picked
o NO DUPLICATE STATES
 Give students time to look over the template and start to brainstorm how they are going to present the idea
to the class
Day 2:
 During social studies (and potentially free time at the end of other subjects) students will be able to start
researching their state. They will need to be able to answer all the questions that are listed on the template.
 Make sure you are walking around and answering questions along with providing guidance with websites
and research
 Students will have to submit the google doc to the classroom dropbox before they start their presentation
Day 3:
 Students should finish up their research if they were not able to complete it all the first day.
 Students will now move to what type of presentation technology they want to use to present their state to
the class
Day 4:
 Students should be finishing up their presentations and putting the final touches on their project.
 Once students are finished with their projects, they will submit their presentation via google classroom.
Students will also use a separate google sheet to sign up for presenting their project (Day 5 and potentially 6)
 Projects have to be submitted before they present.
Day 5:
 Start class time off by going over good presenting skills (facing audience, talk loudly and clearly, make eye
contact with audience, don’t look at presentation the whole time) and good listening skills ( give full
attention to presenter, hands in laps, no talking, raise hand if you have a question, clap at the end of each
presentation)
 Start off all the presentations (If students don’t get through all of their presentations they continue the next
day.

Assessment Plan:
I plan on assessing how my students understand their research and if they have learned anything based off of how
they had filled out their template along with how they present the material that they had searched.

How I planned on grading the projects is listed below. The project will be a total of 50 pts.
