Lesson Title: Weather

Objectives:
Students will be able to…
Understand the concept of weather.
Identity different kinds of weather.
Develop an understanding of classification by sorting weather picture cards.
State Standards:
K-PS3-1 Students will demonstrate an understanding of how weather works.
Context:
This lesson is a Kindergarten weather lesson. I am teaching this lesson because weather is an
important topic to learn. We are constantly surrounded by weather and it affects everyone’s lives.
Kids are constantly surrounded by extreme weather like tornadoes and hurricanes and it is
important for them to know how weather works. Students will be able to bring previous
knowledge into the lesson. Children have experienced the concept of weather, whether it is
seeing a thunderstorm or when they play outdoor sports. For example, students experiencing
intense heat on their bodies and how their bodies cool themselves down. After this lesson,
students will have learned new things that will prepare them for the next lesson topic. Like
getting better at analyzing and observing skills.
Data:
Students will be put into two groups. Students will be grouped by previous class assessments.
Those assessments have determined who has a better understanding of the lesson. In the lesson,
data will be collected by the exit slip that they will turn in at the end of class.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
In the introduction, I will explain what we will be doing in class. I will also ask the class
questions like what they know about weather and what is their favorite type of weather. During
the end of the introduction I will split the class into groups. These groups will decide where they
will start (collaborative and independent digital.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes):
In this section of the lesson, I will show a YouTube video on the Smart Board. The video will
explain the different kinds of weather. The video will help better educate my students by
explaining the different types of weather. It will also give them a visual.
Collaborative (15 minutes):
Students will work together to complete a picture card activity. Students will match images of
weather with different vocab. For example, an image of a sun will be matched with the vocab
term sunny.
Independent (15 minutes):
Each student will decide what kind of weather they like most and the type of weather they like
the least. Each student will grab a magazine, that I will provide, and cut out each kind of
weather. Students will make a t-chart labeled with a happy face on one side and a sad face on the
other. Then they will glue their images from the magazine onto their chart.

Closure (20 minutes):

At the end of class I will hand out an exit slip. The exit slip will ask how they thought the lesson
activities went. It will also ask how well they understood the topic and what they need help with.
This will help me gain information from my students and tell me who needs more help.

Rationale:
(YouTube Video):
I chose the show a YouTube video to give my students a visual of what we are learning.
This helps support students learning, standards, and objectives by digging deeper into the
topic of weather. I know this video is of high quality because I made sure to watch it
myself to make sure it was good enough for my students.
