Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: What shape am I?

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify two dimensional shapes from online material and see how
shapes differ from each other and what their distinguishing features are.
Students will be able to do the same but with three-dimensional shapes and will be able to
identify what shape everyday objects are (such as a basketball being a sphere).

State Standards:
"K.G.2 Identify and describe a given shape and shapes of objects in everyday
situations to include two-dimensional shapes (i.e., triangle, square, rectangle,
hexagon, and circle) and three-dimensional shapes (i.e., cone, cube, cylinder, and
sphere)."

Context: I will be teaching this lesson because it is one of the key fundamentals of what you
learn in your school career, as well as one of the required state standards for Kindergartners in
South Carolina. This lesson will be what kicks off the shape unit. Students should have an idea
for what shapes are from their parents or preschool but if not, shapes would be talked about
throughout the year leading to this lesson. This will serve as an introductory lesson for when the
unit continues and go down the list of state standards for the unit, such as creating three
dimensional models of the shapes.
Data: Students will be grouped based on their academic level (i.e.: fast paced, average, slower
paced), This way as a teacher, you can help the groups better since they all are on the same page
pace wise. You also do not have to worry about disagreements among the students by some
becoming impatient by a slower pace, or some being confused at a faster pace. This data will be
based on the student's performance in the class in general but more specifically in the subject
area since some students may excel in one area and lack in another. Data that will collected from
today's lesson is going to be based on an exit ticket where they will explain if they have any
criticisms of the lesson and answer questions of the lesson- almost like a quiz- to see if they truly
took in the lesson.
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
The students will be arriving from their lunch and recess period. Have students put away their
belongings in their cubbies. After they complete that, instruct them to take a seat in their
assigned spots on the carpet at the SMART board. When they are all situated, begin the lesson by
clicking on the powerpoint in the computers hard drive marked "Shape Lesson November".
There, you will follow the steps and introduce the lesson by first asking open ended question to
the students: "Does anyone know that shapes are?", "Can anyone list some types of shapes?" etc.
The powerpoint will then explain each of the shapes the children will be identifying for the
lesson and their distinguishing features.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

For the teacher directed section, you will keep clicking the slides and play the first video you see
which will be ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEbRDtCAFdU )- a video on two
dimensional shapes, these being a circle, triangle, square and rectangle. The video is very
interactive and asks questions to the students which they should have learned from the
introductory lesson. After that video, you will recap it, asking the students what shapes were
sung about. Next you will play the video similar ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=guNdJ5MtX1A ) which will be on three dimensional shapes including: cube, sphere, cylinder,
cone. You will do the same that you did for the other video and recap it. Next you will show the
students real life examples of shapes, such as a basketball for sphere and a can for cylinder.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

For the collaborative portion, split the class by the pre written out group provided in the
folder. The student here will go back to their table as a group and the runner for the week will
grab the supplies for the lesson from the teacher cubby. These supplies will be paper with shapes
printed out, scissors, and markers. Here, students will work together and cut out the shapes,
which will work on their fine motor skills. Then the students will label the shape, improving their
spelling and writing skills. Finally, as a group, they will work as a group and group them by
whether they are two or three dimensional

Independent Digital (10 minutes):

Once the students are finished, they will be instructed to grab the class iPads and walk
back to their table and open the google classroom and click the math tab, there they will access
the link to https://www.splashlearn.com/geometry-games where they can will play "Identify two
dimensional shapes" for the first five minutes, and switch to "Identify three dimensional shapes"
for the latter half. These games will help them build their shape skills by idntifying them with
using real life shapes.

Closure (10 minutes):

After all the 10 minutes of independent digital time is up, the teacher will adress the class
and re focus the groups. They will then instruct them to take the exit ticket on the google
classroom. the exit ticket will consist of ranking of a scale 1-10 of "How did you enjoy the
lesson", and multiple choice question of the students to identify every shape we learned about
today. After they have completed, the students will put their ipads away and be asked to take a
seat again, wait for everyone to be done so they can go to their music lesson.

Rationale:

1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEbRDtCAFdU- This is the video covering two

dimensional shapes. Why I chose a video is because the music adds more energy to the
class instead of the teacher just explaining what it is. This will make the student more
eager to engage more in the lesson. This goes for the three dimensional video as well
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guNdJ5MtX1A)
2. https://www.splashlearn.com/geometry-games- Students learn better when they can relate
it to their everyday lives, this is because when they have a connection with something or
can physically hold or know what it is, it is easier for them to understand. It also stays
with the theme of shapes and the lesson objectives,
