Just like there is a short-term memory cognitive process, there is also a cognitive process

called long term retrieval. Long term retrieval is being able to store information for long periods

of time and then being able to retrieve it through association. With this cognitive process one has

the ability to recall information previously learned and also being able to recall as many

unrelated items in any given order. Long term retrieval is linked with the math subject, reading,

and written expression. There are some weaknesses that some students may have in this area, but

there are also some accommodations.

One weakness that is associated with long term retrieval, is being able to learn new

concepts. Another weakness may be that the student will most likely struggle with memorizing

and recalling information. So, when asked about the writing process, the student will most likely

not be able to recall most of the information and maybe even none. The student can also have a

weakness when it comes to retrieving information fluently. Meaning that they may have

problems recalling certain information even if it is associated to something they have previously

learned or heard about.

Although some students may struggle with long term retrieval, there are some

accommodations that a teacher can provide for these students. One accommodation is that the

teacher can teach memory strategies such as acronyms to remember certain information. An

example can be PEMDAS, to this day I still remember the steps to solve a math equation because

of that acronym. Little things like that can most definitely help students with their long-term

retrieval. Another is that the teacher can provide tests that prompt the students to recall

information such as multiple-choice questions, or questions with word banks. The teacher can

also provide the students with hands on learning, because a lot of the times the perception of

feeling, touching, or using their hands can really help information stick with the students.
