Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

The Praxis is the test used to measure the academic skills and knowledge of potential

teachers. Not only is it required if to teach in Nevada, but you must pass the Praxis in order to

pursue your Bachelor’s degree at NSC, UNR, or UNLV. The core Praxis tests include Reading

Core, Writing Core, and Math Core. To pass the reading exam, a score of 156 is required. The

passing score in writing is 162, and a score of 150 is passing in Math.

Exam Preparation

Each of my education courses had a module exclusively devoted to information on the

Praxis. In my EDU 202 course, we have a whole Praxis preparation section. Before taking my

practice Praxis Core tests, I did some basic preparation. I had already taken diagnostic Praxis

tests, and I did do a few practice questions through Khan Academy’s Praxis Prep course. That’s

about as much preparation as I did to get ready for the ETS practice tests.

Exam Results

My practice test results are as follows. I scored 64% on my reading test, 69% on my math

test, and 80% on the writing portion. Scoring in the 60s for reading and math means that I should

do some more preparation before taking the official Praxis tests so that I can raise my odds of

passing on my first try. A score of 80% in writing makes me likely to pass that portion of the

official Praxis, assuming I do well on the essay portions.

Future Exam Preparation

I will do a few things differently in my preparation for the official Praxis tests. I will

actually study using Khan Academy. Although I only did a few practice questions, I really liked

the structure of their preparation course. I will actually adhere to the suggested roadmap and

study suggestions. Another thing that I will do differently is to get plenty of rest before taking the

official test. I had to take the ETS practice tests without a good night’s rest due to my schedule.

I’ll be sure to clear out my schedule the day before so that I can really focus on the Praxis and

get sufficient rest. Other than that, I am confident in my ability to pass the praxis on my first try.
