1. Description
On Thursday1"tJuly,a wallbuiltfromnominal2OOmmwideby 200mmhighand400 mm
longblockswastestedto ASTME514-90' standardrest Methodfor water penetration
and
LeakagethroughMasonry'at CSIROBCE,Highettsite.

Thewallwas3 blockswideand9 courseshigh.Themortarwasmadeto thefollowing

specification
1 partcement
112parl lime
4 and112partssand- wellgraded1/2brickiessandand 1/2plasterers
sano.
Thewallhadbeenconstructed on the2ndJune1999.

The MiconHydrolite
10waterproofingcompound wasappliedin onecoatby rollerto the
exposedfaceof thewallandallowedto cureforthreedaysbeforetesting.

Thetestmethodapplieswaterat a rateof 138l/m,/hrandthereis a positivepressure

betweenthewet sideandobservation sideof s00 pa. TheASTMmethodrequires thetestto
't
lastfor a periodof 4 hours.Figure showsthetestchamberattachedto thewall.
Note: 500 Pa equatesto a basewindspeedof about33 m/sor 12okm/hfor wallsof low
risebuildings
andonlysubjectedto a positivepressure
coefficient.
Thewallhadbeenpreviously testedwithoutthewaterproofing coatingandFigure2 shows
the extentof waterleakagethroughthe wallal 112hourof testduration.

2. Results
At two hoursof testduration,
two smalldampspotshadappeared.one in the secondbottom
courseas shownin Figure3 andthesecondin fourthbottomcourseas shownin Figure4. At
2% hoursthetwodampspotshaddoubledin sizeandthreedampspotshadappeaiedas
shownin Figure5. At 3 hours,oneadditional
dampspothadappeared in the blockon the
right-handsidefivecoursesdownfromthetop as shownin Figure6. At fourhourswhenrne
testwascompleted, therewereno newdampspotswithonlythosealreadyexislinghaving
grownin sizeas shownin Figure7.Thetotaldampsurfaceequatedto .1.2% of thewall
surface.

3. Conclusion
As the wallwhichhadpreviouslyfailedwithover50%of itssurfacebeingsaturated at 30
minutes,only1.2o/o
dampness aftera durationof 4 hoursof exposureis a morethan
satisfactory
improvement. Thewaterproofingsystemcouldbe classified as givingsatisfactory
performance on wallsthatareverywaterpervious priorto theapplication
of the
waterproofi
ng compound.
